The word =y,,,(4, is no where found in the Scripture, but in this place only. But the advantage which force would make from thence, namely, that it being but one place wherein the Lord CLri, ft is called a Surety, it is not of much force,or much to be infifted on, is both unreafonable and abfurd. For (a )this one place is of Divine Revelation,and therefore is of the fame Authority with twenty Teftimonies unto the fame purpole. One Divine Teftimony makes our Faith no lefs neceffary, nor doth one lets fecure it from being deceived, then an hundred. 2. The lignification of the word is known, from the ufe of it, and what it fignifies among men, that no queftion can be made of its fenfe and importance, though it be but once ufed; And this on any occafion removes the Difficulty and Danger, ä ntiyo,ukv.n. (3 ) The thing it f if intended is fo .fully declared by the Apoftle in this place, and fo plentifully taught in other places of the Scripture, as that the (ingle ufe of this word, may add light, but can be no prejudice un- to it. Something may be fpoken unto the fignification of the word ' =y,uos which will give light into the thing intended by it. yvúAov is Vola manes, the palm of the hand ; Thence is tyyos, or Hs Ta ;x,dAov, to deliver into the hand. iypsnis is of the fame fignification. Hence being a Surety is interpreted by f riking the hand, -Prov. 6. 1. My Son i f thou be Surety y for thy friend, i f thou haft f rielZen thy hand, with a Stranger.
