Cauf s of the ACezn Covenant. 2 65 enter into a New Covenant with mankZind upon Terms fuited unto our Reafon, poffzble unto our Abilities, and every way ad- vantageous unto us. For thefe Terms are Faith and (incere Obedience, or filch an Ant unto the Truth of Divine Revela- tions, as is efethial in Obedience unto the Will of God contained in them, upon the encouragement given thereunto in the Promifes of Eternal Life, or a future Reward made therein. On the per- formance of thefe Conditions our Juflification, Adoption, and future Glory do depend ; For they are that Righteoufneß before God, whereon he pardons our (lns, and accepts our perfons, as if we wereperfectly Righteous. Wherefore by this procuring the New Covenant for us, which they afcribe unto the death of Chrift, they intend the abrogation of the old Covenant, or of the Law, or at leafs fucha Derogation from it, that it (hall no more oblige us either unto finlefs Obedience or Pu- nifhment, nor require a perfe ± Righteoufnefs unto our Jufti- fication before God ; and the Conftitution of a new Law of Obedience accommodated unto our prefent fiate and condi- tion, on whole obfervance all the Promifes of the Gofpel do depend. Others fay, that in the death of Chrift there was real fa- tisfaetion made unto God ; not to the Law, or unto God ac- cording to what the Law required ; but unto God abfolute- ly. That is, He did what God was well pleated and f tisfied withall, without any refpe& unto his Juftice or the Curfe of the Law. And they add, that hereon the whole Righteoufneff of Chrift is imputed unto us, fo far, as that we are made Partakers of the Benefits thereof And moreover, that the way of the Communication of them unto us, is by the New Covenant which by his Death the Lord Chrift procured. For the Conditions of this Covenant are efiablifhed in the Cove- nant it fel f whereon God will beftow all the Benefits and' Effefts of it upon us, which are Faith and Obedience.
