Cau.r of the New Covenant. 275 Grace of Chrift doth not raife up all things unto a Conform; ty and compliance with the Holinef and Will of God decla, red therein, but accommodate all things unto our prefent con- dition, nothing can be invented more difhonourable to Chrift and the Gofpel. For what doth it elfe but make Chrift the Mini Fier of (n, in difanulling the Holinefs that the Law requires, or the Obligation of the Law unto it, without any provifion of what might anfwer, or come into the Room of it, but that which is incomparably lets worthy. Nor is it confiftent with Divine Wifdom, Goodnefs, and Immutability, to appoint unto man(insl a Law of Obedience, and call them all under the fevereft penalty upon the Tranfgreffion of it, when he could in Jufiice and Honour, have given them fuch a Law of Obedience, whole obfervance might confift with many failings and fins. For if he have done that now, he could have done fo before, which how far it refle &s on the Glory of the Divine Properties might be eafily manifefted. Neither Both this fond Imagination comply with thofe Tefii- monies of Scripture, that the Lord Chrift came not to defiroy the Law, but to fulfil it, that he is the end of the Law, and that byFaith the Law is not difanulled but efiablifhed. Laftly, the Lord Chrift was the Mediator and Surety of the new Covenant, in and by whom it was ratified, confirmed and efiablifhed ; and therefore by him theConfiitution of it was not procured. For all the A &s of his Office belong unto that Mediation ; And it cannot be well apprehended how any Al of Mediation for the Efiablifhment of the Covenant and rendring it effe &ual, fhould procure it. 7.
