2 8 -o Gonfequents of (hr /'s being one Guilt in the Scripture is the Re f fieíl of unto the fanc`fion of the Law, whereby the firmer becomes obnoxious unto punifhment. And to be guilty is to be JnrtAxp- Ti egw, liable unto punifhment for fin, from God, as the fupreme Lawgiver and Judge of all. And fo guilt or Reatus is well defined to be obligatio ad panam, propter culpam, ant admiffam in fe, ant _imputatam, jufle ant injuile. For fo Bathfbeba Pays unto David, that the and her Son Solomon fhould be =wo; t Sinners, that is, be efteemed guilty or liable unto punifhment for fome evil laid unto their charge, r Kings I. 2 r. And the diftin&ion of Dignitas pene,and obligatio ad penam,is but the fame thing in divers words. For both do but exprefs the Relation of fin unto the fàn &ion of the Law, or if they may be conceived to differ, yet are they infeparable ; for there can be no obli- gatio ad panam, where there is not dignitas pent.. Much legs is there anything of weight in the diftin&ion of Reatus culpe, and Reatus pent.. For this Reatus culpe is no- thing but dignitas pen&propter culpam. Sin hath other con- fiderations, namely, its formal nature, as it is a Tranfgreffion of the Law ; and the (lain or filth that it brings upon the Soul ; but the guilt of it, is nothing but its refpe& unto pu- nifhment . from the fan&ion of the Law. And fo indeed Reatus culpe, is Reatus paw. ; the guilt of fin, is its defert of punifliment. And where there is not this Reatus culpe, there can be no plena, no punifhmentproperly fo called. For plena is vindila nox&, the revenge due to fin. So therefore there can be no punifhment, nor Reatus perm, the guilt of it, but where there is Reatus culpe ; or fin confidered with its guilt. And the Reatus pane, that may be fuppofed without the guilt of fin, is nothing but that obnoxioufnef unto affliClive evil on the occafion of fin, which the Socinians admit with refpe& unto the fuffering of Chrift, and yet execrate his ,fatisfa &ion.
