2 8 2 Consequences on Chr J's being one tifhip of Chrift to anfwer for the fins of men, Heb. io. 5, b, j. (2) In order unto this End, he made him under the Law, or gave the Law power over him, to demand of him, and in- flier on him the penalty which was due unto the fins of them for whom he undertook,. Gal. 8. 13. chap. 4. 4, 5. (3) For the Declaration of the Righteoufnefs of God in this fettitig forth of Chrift to be a Propitiation, and to bear our Iniqui- ties, the Guilt of our fins was transferred unto him in an Act of the Righteous Judgment of God, accepting and efteening of' him as the Guilty per /n ; as it is with publick fureties in every cafe. 2. The Lord Chrifls voluntary fu /eption of the Rate and condition of a furety, or undertaker for the Church, to ap- pear before the Throne of Gods Juftice for them, to anfwer whatever was laid unto their charge, was required hereunto. And this he did abfolutely. There was a concurrence of his awn Wild in and unto all thole Divine Alts whereby he and the Church were conftituted one myfdiçal perfon. And of his own Love and Grace did he as our furety ftand in our ftead before God, when he made Inquifition for fin ; He took it on himfelf, as unto the put-Ailment which it deferved. Hence it became juft and righteous that he fhould Puffer, the NI for the unjuft, that he might bring us unto God. For if this be not. fo, I defire to know what is become of the Guilt of the fins of Believers; If it were not transferred on Chrift, it remains ftill upon themfelves, or it is nothing. It will be faid that Guilt is taken away by the fee pardon of fin. But if fo,, there was no need of punifhment for it at all; which is indeed' what the Sooinian4 plead, but by others is not admitted: For if punithment be not for Guilt, it is not punifhment. But it is fiercely obje&ted againft what we have afferted;, that if the Guilt of our ftts was imputed unto Chrift, them . was he conf%ituted a (inner thereby ; for it is the Guilt of frog that makes any one to.be truly a fanner.
