The Form' at Caufe of yuf ificaion. of Chrift, which *as the entire Recovery of us unto him- felf could not be attained. And therefore as Faith, under the formal confideration of it was necefrary unto the f `rfl end, namely; that of giving Glory unto God, fo unto this latter end, it was neceffary that this Faith {hould be accompa- nied with, yea and contain in it felf the feeds of all thole other Graces wherein the Divine Nature doth confift, where- of we are to be made Partakers. Not only therefore the thing it felf, or the communication of the Righteoufnefs of Chrift unto us, but the way and manner, and means of it, do depend on Gods Soveraign order and difpofal. Wherefore although Chrift did make fatisfa1ion unto the yifflice of God for all the fins of the Church, and that as a common perfon, ( for no man in his Wits can deny but that he who is a Medi atór and a Surety, is in forne fenfe a common perfon) and al- though he did pay ail our Debts, yet doth the particular In- tere {t of this or that man, in what he did and fuffered, de- pend on the way, means, and order deigned of God unto that end. This and this alone gives the true neceffity of all the Duties which are required of us, with their order and their ends. Sly; It is objected, That the Imputation of the Righteoufnef of Chr fi, which we defend, overthrows the neceffity of Faith it fell: This is home indeed. Aliquid adhærebit, is the Defign of ,all thefe Obje&ions. But they have Reafon to plead for themfelves who make it. For on this fuppo!ition, they fay, the, Righteoufnefs of Chri fl is ours before we do believe. For Chrift f fätisf ed for all our fins, as if we bad fatisfied in our own per f ns. .Añd'h. he who is eflcerned to have fatisfied for all his (ins in his own per /n, is acquittedfrom them all, and accounted All, whe- ther he believe or no . nor is there any Ground or Realm why he fhould be required to: believe. If therefore the Righteoufnef of Chrifl be really ours, becaufe in the judgment of God we are efleerned.to have wrought it in him, then it is ours before we do believe.
