And yet there is a manifold fenfe wherein men may be faid ° be. °have done what was done for them, and in their name before their gtual exiftence ; fo that therein is no ab- furdity. ` As unto what is added by the way that Chrift did not do nor fuffer the Idem that we were obliged unto ; whereas he did what the Law required, and fi fered "what the Law threatned unto the difobedient, which is the whole of what'we are obliged unto, it will not be fo éafily proved ; nor the Arguments very fudden y anfwered whereby the con- trary hath been confirmed. That Chrift did fuflain the place of a furety, or was the furety of the New Covenant, 'the Scri- pture loth fo exprefly affirm, that it -cannot be denied. And that there may be fureties in cafes' criminal, "`as well as civil and pecuniary, hath been proved before. What elfe occurs about the fingularity of Chrijis Obedience as he was Mediator, proves only that his'Righteoufnefs as formally and inherently his, was peculiar unto himfelf, and that the AdjunCfs of it which arifè from its relation unto his perfon, as it was inhe- rent in him, are not communicable unto them to whom it is imputed. It is moreover urged, That upon the fuppofed Imputation of the Righteoufnef of Chrifl, it will follow that every Believer is pl./bled by the works of the Law. For the Obedience of Chrift was a legal Righteoufne ? and if that be imputed unto us,' then are we juflifed by the Law, which is contrary unto expref Tefli- monies of Scriptures in many places.'
