Wherefore the wit-eft and f?feft courfe is, as unto our Juftification before God, ut- terly to forego this plea, and not to inf ft on our own Obe- dience, leaf} our fins fhould appear alto, and be heard. No Reafon can any 'man-give on his own Account, why they -should not fo be. And if they be fo, the beft of 'men will be caft in theirTrial, as-the Pfalmift declares. Two things are required in this Trial that a -finner may fraud.. (a) .That his. Iniquities be notobfervcd, for if they he fo, he is loft for ever. (2) That a Righteoufnefs be pro - duced and pleaded that will endure the Trial. For Juftifi- cation is upon.a. Juftifying Righteoufnefs. For the firft of thefe, the Pfalmifl tells us it muft be through pardon or for - givenefs. But there is Forgivenefiwith thee, wherein lies our only relief againft the condemnatory fentence of the Law with refpeét unto our Iniquities ; that is, through the Blood of Chrift ; for in him we have Redemption through his Blood, even the Forgiven s of fins, Ephef T. 7. The other cannot be our own Obe ience, becaufe of our iniquities. Wherefore this the fame Pfälmifl directs us unto, Pfal.7 i.16. I -will go in the flrength of the Lord God, I will make mention of thy Righteoufnefs, of thine only. The Righteoufnefs f God, and not his own, yea in oppofition unto his own, isthe only plea that in this cafe he would infift upon.
