The Reafan the .Pfalmifl gives why he will not put it unto the Trial whether he fhould be acquitted or juftified upon his own obedience, is this general Axiom ; for in thy light, or before thee, Pall no man living be juflified. This muff be fpoken abfolutely, or with refpe& unto force one way or caufe of Juftification. If it be fpoken abfolutely, then this work ceafeth for ever, and there is indeed no fuch thing as Juftifi- cation before God. But this is contrary unto the whole Scri- pture, and deftruftive of the Gofpel. Wherefore it is fpo- ken with refpe& unto our own Obedience and works. He doth not pray abfolutely that he would not enter into judg- ment with him, for this were to forego his Government of the . world, but that he would not do fo on the account of his own Dutys and Obedience. But if fo be thefe Dutys and Obedience did anfwerin any fenfe or way, what is required of us as a Righteoufnefs unto Juftification, there was no Rea - fon why he fhould deprecate a Trial by them or upon them. But whereas the Holy Ghoft doth fo pofitively affirm, that no man living fhall be juflified in the light o f God, by or upon his own Works or Obedience, it is -I confefs marvellous unto me, that force fhould fo intepret the Apoftle James, as if he affirmed the exprefs contrary. Namely, that we are juflified in the fight of God by our own Works, whereas indeed he Pays no fuch thing. This therefore is an Eternal Rule of Truth, by,or upon his own Obedience, no man living can be T t juitified
