Imputation of the Righteotufnef of hrijt, 3 29 unto the manner of its communication unto us, and of its per- formance by us 'from Faith in God by Jefus Chrift, and Love unto him, as the Author and Fountain of all the Grace and Mercy procured and adminiftred by him, it lath réfpe ft unto the Gofpel. What will follow from hence ? why that he is juf that doth thole things which that Law requires whereby he is to be judged. He is fo certainly. For not the Hearers of the Law are jug before God, but the doers of the Law (hall be juf ifiéd, Rom. 2. 13. So Moles defcribeth the Righteoufnee of the Law, that the man that doth thofe things ¡hall live in them, Rom. t o. 5. But although the Righteouf- nefs whereof we difcourfe, be required by the Law, as cer- tainly it is, for it is nothing but the Law in our hearts, from whence we wall, in the ways and keep the Statutes or Com- mandments of God ; yet Both it not fo anfwer the Law, as that any man can be juftified by it. But then it will be faid, that if it Both not anfwer that Law and Rule whereby we are to be judged, then it is no RighteoufneJ? for all Righteouf- nefs muft anfwer the Law whereby it is required. And I' fay it is moft true, it is no perfect Righteoufneß; it doth not fo anfwer the Rule and Law, as that we can be juftified by it, or fafely judged on it. But fo far as it doth anfwer -the Law, it is a Righteoufnefs, that is, imperfectly fo, and therefore is an imperfeït Righteoufneß; which yet giveth the Denominati- of Righteous unto them that have it, both abfolutely and comparatively. It is faid therefore, that it is the Law of Grace or the God /el from whence we are denominated Righteous with this Righteoufne .. But that we are by the Gofpel deno- minated Righteous from any Righteoufnee that is not requi- red by the moral Law, will not be proved. Nor doth the Law of Grace or the Gofpel any where require of ùs, or prefcribe unto us this Righteoufnefs, as that whereon we are to be juftified before God.
