Imputation of the Righteoufnef of Chrifl.3 37 4. This opinion puts an irreconcileable Difference be- tween the Law and the Gofel, not to be compofed by any diftin &ions. For according unto it, Cod declares by the Gof el a man to be perfealy Righteous, juftificd and bleffed, upon the confideration of a Righteoufnefs that is iniperfea and in the Law he pronounceth every one accurfed who con - tinueth not in all things required by it, and as they are there- in required. But it is Paid that this Righteoufnefs is no otherwife to be confidered, but as the condition of the new Covenant whereon we obtain Reiniffon of (ins on the foie ac- count of the f tisfac`tion of Chrifi wherein our Juftification doth confift. Anf. i. Some indeed do fay fo, but not all, not the molt, not the rnofi learned with whom in this controverfie we have to do. And in our Pleas for what we believe to be the Truth, we cannot always have refpe& unto every private opinion whereby it is oppofed. (2.) That Juftification confifts only in the pardon of fin, is fo contrary to the fignifi- cation of the Word, the confiant ufe of it in the Scripture, the common notion of it amongft mankind, the fenfe of men in their own Confciences who find themfelves under an Ob- ligation unto Duty, andexprefsTeftimoniesof the Scripture, as that I fomewhat wonder, how it can be pretended. But it fhall be fpoken unto elfewhere. ( 3 ) If this Righteouf- nefs, be the fulfilling of the condition of the new Covenant whereon we are juftified, it mutt be in it fèlf fuch as exa&ly anfwereth fame Rule or Law of Righteoufnefs and fo be pet:- fed, which it doth not; and therefore cannot bear the place of a Righteoufnefs in our Juftification. (q.) That this Righteoufnefs is the condition of our Juftification before God, or of that intereft in the Righteoufnefs of Chrift whereby we are juftified , is not proved , nor ever will be. Xx i
