Imputation of the Righteoufne f of Chri .3 3 9 no man fo Righteous, fo Holy in the whole World, nor ever was, but his own Confluence would charge him in many things with his coming fhort of the Obedience required of him, in h matter or manner, in the kind or degrees of perfe on. For there is no man that liveth and /inneth not. Abfolutely, Nemo abfolvitur fejudice. Let any man be put unto a Trial in 'trim- felf whether he can be juftified in his own Confcience, by his own Righteoufnefs, and he will be caft in the Trial at his own Judgment feat. And he that doth not thereon con - clude, that there mull be another Righteoufnefs whereby he mull be juftified, that originally and inherently is not his own, will be at a lofs for peace with God. But it will be faid, that men may be juflfièdin their Confeiences, that they have performed the condition of the new Covenant, which is all that is pleaded with refpeCt unto this Righteoufneff.. And I no way doubt but that men may have a comfortable perfwafion of their ownfncerity in Obedience, and fatisfa &ion in the Ac- ceptance of it with God. But it is when they try it, as an efffeét of Faith, whereby they are juftified, and not as the con- dition of their Juftification. Let it be thus plated in their . minds that God requireth a perfonal Righteoufnefs in order unto their Jujiification, whereon their Determination mull be this is my Righteoufnefs' which I prefent unto God that I may be juftified, and they will final difficulty in arriving at it, if I be not much miltaken. 3. None of theHoly men of old whofe Faith and Experience are recorded in the Scripture, did ever plead their own perfonal Righteoufnefs under any Notion of it, either as to the merit of their Works, or as unto their compleat performance of what was required of them as the condition of the Covenant in Order unto their Juftification before God. This hath been fpoken unto before. XX 2 CHAP.
