This is that which we plead for, as the fubfrance of the myfiery of the Gofpel, confidering the Perlon and Grace of this Undertaker or Surety. And herein all things do tend unto the Exaltation of the Glory of God in all the holy properties of his nature, with the fulfilling and efla- blifhing of the Law it fell, Math. 5. i 7. Rom. 3. 31. chap. 8.4. chap. io. 3, 4. The third way is by an A& of God to- wards the Law, and another towards us, whereby the nature of the Righteoufnefs which the Law requireth is changed; which we !hall examine as the only referve againft our prefent Ar- gument. 13. It is faid therefore that by our own perfonal Obedience we do anfwer the Righteoufnefs of the Law fo far as it is requi- red of us. But whereas no fiber perlon can imagine that we can, or that any one in our lapfed condition ever did yield in our own perlons that perfect finlef Obedience unto God which is required of us in the Law of Creation, two things are fuppofed that our Obedience, fuch as it is, may be accep- ted with God as if it were ffnlefr and perfea. For although force will not allow that the Righteoufnefs of Chrift is im- puted unto us for what it is, yet they contend that our own Righteoufnefs is imputed unto us for what it is not. Of there things the one refpe&eth the Law, the other our Obedience. 14. That which refpe&eth the Law is not the Abrogation of it. For although this would feem the molt expedite way for the Reconciliation of this Difficulty, namely, that the Law of Creation is utterly abrogated by the Gofpel, both as unto its Obligation unto Obedience and Punifhment ; and no Law to be continued in force but that which requires only fncere Obedience of us, whereof there is as unto Duties the manner of their performance, not any abfolute Rule or Meafure, yet this is not by many pretended.
