3 7 2 The Imputation ofthe obedience of Christ us, and died for us, obeyed for us, and furred for us ; that by the obedience of one, many might be made ,Righteous. This was the Grace of our Lord Jefus Chrift ; and this is the Faith of the Catholick Church. And what he did for us, is imputed unto us. This is included in the very notion of his doing itfor us, which cannot be fpoken in any fenfe, unlefs that which he fo did, be imputed unto us. And I think Men ought to be wary, that they do not by dillintiions and ftudied eva /Ions, for the defence of their own private opinions , Thake the Foundations of Chriftian Religion. And Tam lure it will be eafier for them, as it is in the Proverb, To wreft the Club out of the hand ofHercules,then to difpoffefs the minds of true Believers of this perfwafìon : That what the Lord Chri.ff did in Obedience unto God according unto the Law, he deigned in his Love and Grace to do itfor them. He needed tto Obedience for himfelf, he came not into a capacity of yielding Obedience for himfelf, but for us; and therefore for us it was, that he fulfilled the Law in Obedience unto God according unto the terms of it.. The obligation that was on him unto Obedience, was originally no lets for us, no lets needful unto us, no more for himfelf, no more necef- fary unto him, then the obligation that was on him as the Surety of the Covenant, to fur the penalty of the Law, was either the one, or the other. 3. Setting afide the confideration of the Grace and Love of Chrifl, and the compaa between the Father and the Son, as unto his undertaking for us, which undeniably proves all that he did in the purfuit of them to be done for us, and not for himfelf : 1 fay letting afide the confideration of there things, and the Humane Nature of Chrift, by virtue of its union with the Perron of the Son of God, had a right unto, and might have immediately been admitted into the higheft Glory whereof it was capable , without any antecedent Obedience unto the Law.
