380 The Imputation of the obedience of Chri fi done no evil, and to havefulfilled all righteoufnefs. Some fay, Pardon gives a righteoufnefs óf Innocency, but not of obedience. But it cannot give a Righteoufnefs of Innocency, abfolutely, filch as Adam had. For he had actually done no evil. It only removethguilt, which is the refpeec of fin unto punifhment, infuing on, the Sanftion of the Law.. And this suppofition which is an evident miftake, animates this whole Obje Li- on. The like may be faid of what is in like manner fuppofed, namely, That not to be unrighteous, which a man is on the par- don of fin, is the fame with being, righteous. For if not to be unrighteous be taken privatively, it is the fame with being juft or righteous :, For it fuppofeth, that he who is fo, bath done all the duty that is required of him, that he may be righteous. But not to be unrighteous negatively, as the expreftion is here uCed, it doth not do fo. For at belt it fuppofeth no more, but that a Man as yet path done nothing acíually again fl the ,Rule of Righteoufnefs. N ow this may be when yet he hath per; formed none of the duties that, are required of him to con - ftitute him righteous, becaufe the times and occafions of them, are not yet. It proceeds on this suppofition, That the Law, in cafe of fin, doth not oblige unto punifhment and obedience both ; fo as that it is not fatisfied, fulfilled, or complied withal, unlefs it be anfwered with refpec`t untoboth. For if it Both fo, then the pardon of fin, which only frees us from the penalty of the Law,doth yet leave it neceffary, that Obedience be perform- ed unto it, even all that it loth require. But this, in my judg- ment, is an evident miflake, and that fuch as Both not efla- bl i Law, the iv but make it void. And this I (hall demon: tint a. The
