Into the Law, Declared and Ì/indicated 393 under the Law; They did not defare to be under the Curse of the Law, but only its Obligation unto Obedience ; which in all usage of Speech, is the first proper fenfe of that Ex- preffion. Wherefore the Lord Chrift being made under the Law for us , he yielded perfect Obedience unto it for us, which is therefore imputed unto us. For that what he did, was done for us, depends folely on Imputation. 2. As he was thus made under the Law, fo he did a7ually fulfil it by his Obedience unto it. So he testifieth concern- ing himself; Think not that I am come to defiroy the Law and the Prophets, I am not come to destroy but to fulfil, Mat. 5. 17. These Words of our Lord Jefus Christ as recorded by the Evangelist, the Jews continually object against the Chriftians, as contradictory to what they pretend to be done by him , namely that he bath destroyed and taken away the Law. And Maimonides in his Treatife De fundamentk Legic, bath many blafphemous Reflections on the Lord Chrift as a falle Prophet in this matter. But the Reconciliation is plain and eafie. There was a twofold Law given unto the Church. The moral and the ceremonial Law. The firft as we have proved is of an eternal Obligation. The other was given only for a Time. That the latter of thefe was to be taken away and abolished the Apoftle proves with invincible Teftimonies out of the Old Teftament against the obstinate Yews, in his Epiftle unto the Hebrews. Yet was it not to be taken away without its Accomplishment when it ceafed of it felf. Wherefore our Lord Chrift did no otherwife diffolve or deftroy that Law, but by the Accomplifhment of it ; and fo he did put an end unto it, as is fully declared, Ephef 2. 14, a 5, a 6. But the Law that which obligeth all men unto Obedienceunto God always, he came not YgmrJ., to destroy ; that is áas7;ioue, to abolish it, as an áivion is ascribed unto the (iv ofifical Law, Heb, 9. (In the fame fenfe is the Word used, Matth. 2 4.2. Chap. 26.6. Chap. 27.40, Mark13. 2, Chap. 14. 58. Chap.15. E e e 29.
