But unto him that worketh not, but believeth on him' that jufiifieth the ungodly, his Faith is counted for Righteoufnef. Rom. 11. 6. If it be of Grace, then is it not of Works. Gal. 2. 16. Knowing that a Man is not juflifted by the Works of the Late, but by the Faith of jefa Chrifl, even we have believed in yefrtr Chri fl, that we might be ju.ftifi,ed by the Faith of Chrift, and not by the Works of the Law , for by the- Works of the Law, (hall no flefh be jailifted. Eph. 2.' 8, g. For by Grace are ye faved through Faith, not of Works, le.fl any Man fhould boa, ft. Tit. 3. 5. Not by works of Righteoufnef , which we have done, but according unto his Mer-° ey he hath faved rtc. Thefe and the like Teftimonies are exprefs, and in pofitive Terms alfert all that we contend for. And I am perfwaded, that no unprejudiced perfon, whole mind is not prepoffeffed with notions and diftineions whereof not the leaft Title is offered unto them from the Texts mentioned nor elfewhere, can but judg that the Law in every fenfe of it, and all forts of Works whatever, that at any time, or by any means Sin- ners or Believers, do or can perform , are not in this or that fenfe ; but every way and in all fences, excluded from our juftification before God. And if it be fo, it is the Righte- oufnefs of Chrift alone that we mull betake our felves unto, or this matter mutt ceafe for ever. And this Inference the Apoftle himfelf makes from one of the Teftimonies before. mentioned, namely that of Gal. 2. 16. for he adds upon it; I through the Law am dead to the Law , that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Chrift ; neverthelefs I live, yet not I, but drift liveth in me, and the life which I now live in the fie,fh, I live by the Faith of the Son of Good, who loved me and gave himfelf for me. I do not fruftrate the Grace of God ; for if Righteoufnefr come by the Law, then is drift dead in vain. F f Our
