Wherefore they make ufe of the preceding Evafion, that Merit is excluded by the Apofile , and Works only as they are meritorious, although the Apoftles plain Argu- rnet.t be that they are excluded becaufe fuch a merit as is inconfiîent with Grace, is infeparable from their Ad- But the Roman Church cannot fo part with (Merit. Where- fore they are to find out a Jort of Works to be excluded only, which they are content to part withal as not meritorious. Such are thole before delcr=tbed, wrought as they fay before believing, and without the aids of-Grace 5 and fuch they fay, are all the Wor1Zs of the Law. And this they do with fome more Modefty and Sobriety , than thofe amongft us, who would have -only external Works and Obfervances to be in- tended. For they grant that fundry internal Works, as thole of Attrition, forrotn for Sin, and the like, are of this Nature. But the Works of the Law it is they fay that are excluded. But this whole Plea, and all the sophif,ns wherewith- it is countenanced, bath been fo difcufied and defeated by'Pro- teiant Writers of all forts againft Bellarmine and others, as that it is needlefs to repeat the fame things , or to add any thing unto them. And it will be fuZciently evinced of fall - hood , in what we shall immediately prove concerning the Law and Works intended by the Apoftle. However the Heads of the Demonftration of the Truth- to the contrary may be touched on. And (a.) The -Apoítle excludeth all Works without diftin Lion or exception. And we are not to diftinguifh where the Law doth not diftinguifh before us. (2.) All the Works of the Law are excluded , therefore all Works wrought after believing by the aids of Grace,, are ex- eluded.
