But not trotting to there Expofitions of the words, he adds, Deinde dicitur Chriflus juflitia noftra, quoniamfatis- fecit patri pro nobis, & eam fatisfaf`lionem ita nobis donat & communicat, cum nor jrfifacat, ut nolira fatisfaCCtio eM jufti- tiz dici po t. And afterwards, Hue made non eJêt abfurdum, f quis diceret nobis imputaci Chrifli pt./titian' & merita, cum nobis donantur & applieantur, ac h Nos ipßDeofatisfecifemus. De juftificat.lib. 2. cap. io. Chrift isfaid to be our Righteouf- nef becaufe he bath made Satisfaction for us to the Father i and doth fo give and communicate that Satisfaction unto us, when he juflifieth us, that it may be faid to be our satisfaïtion, and Righteoufnefs. And in this fenfe it would not be abfurd if any one fhould fay, that the righteoufnefs of Chri.ff and his merits are imputed unto us , as if we our felves had fatisfied God. In this fenfe we fay, that hrift is the Lord our Righ-: teoufnefs; nor is there any thing of importance in the whole Do&rine of Juftification that we own , which is not here granted by the Cardinal; and that in terms which fome among our (elves fcruple and oppofe. I (hall therefore look a little further into this Teftimony which hath wrefted fo eminent a confeffion of the Truth, from fo great an Ad- verfary. Behold, the dayes come, faith the Lord, that Z will raife up unto David a righteous branch, and this k his name whereby he fhall be called, the Lord our Righteoufnef , ver. 5,6. it is canfeffed among Chriftians that this is an illuftrious Re- novation of the frft promife , concerning the Incarnation of the Son of God, and our Salvation by him. This promife was firff given when we had loft our Original Righteoufnfl, and were confidered only as thole who had finned and come frort of the Glory of God. In this ettate a Righteoufnefs was abfolutely neceffiry that we might be again accepted with.
