He declares the penalty of the Law, on the leaft fin, to be Hellfire, in his Affertionbof cauflef anger to be forbidden in the sixth Commandment. If Men would but try them - felves by thefe Rules and others, there given by our Saviour, it would, it may be, take them off from boafling in their own Righteoufnef and Juftification thereby. But as it was then, fo is it now allo ; the molt of them who would maintain a Juftification by Works, do attempt to corrupt the fenfe of the Law, and accommodate it unto their own praftice. The Reader may fee an eminent demonftration hereof, in a late excellent 7reatife, whofe title is , The Practical Divinity of the Papifts difcovered to be deftrutive of Chrianity and Mens fouls. The Spirituality of the Law, with the feverity of its San &ion, extending it felf unto the leafr, and moft imperceptible motions of fin in the heart, are not believed, or not aright confidered by them who plead for yuftifrcation by Works in any fenf. Wherefore the principal defign of the sermon of our Saviour is, as to declare what is the na- ture of that obedience which God requireth by the Law, fo to prepare the minds of his Bifciples to feek after another Righteoufnefs, which in the caute and means of it, was not yet plainly to be declared , although many of them being prepared by the Miniftery of john, did hunger and thirtt after it. But he fuflciently intimates wherein it did confift, in that he affirms of himfelf, That he came to fulfil the Law, Per. 17. What he came for, that he was fent for ; for as he was font, and not for himfelf, He was born to us, given unto us. This was to fufl the Lary, that fo the Righteoufnefs of it might be fulfilled in us. And if we our felves cannot fulfil the Law in the proper fenfe of its commands, which yet is not to be a- bolithed but eftablifhed, as our Saviour declares ; if we cannot avoid the Curfe and Penalty of it upon its tranfgrefï Kkk lion
