He denies that Abraham was juftified by Works, verf. 2. And (r.) Thefe Works were not thofe of the yexvifi Law, which alone Tome pretend to be excluded from our Juftifi- cation in this place. For they were the Works he performed force hundreds of years before the giving of the Law at Sinai: wherefore they are the Works of his Moral Obedience unto God that are intended. (2.) TholeWorks mutt be under- flood which Abraham had then, when he is faid to be jufti- fied in the Teftimony produced unto that purpofe g But the Works that Abraham then had,were Works of Righteoufne&, performed in Faith and Love to God,Works of New Obedience under the Conduit and aids of the Spirit of God ; Works required in the Covenant of Grace. Thefe are the Works excluded from the Juftification of Abraham. And there things are plain , exprefs and evident , not to be eluded by any Diftin& ions or Evafions. All Abraham's Evangeli- cal Works are exprefly exelùded from his Juftification be- fore God. 2. He proves by the Teftimony of Scripture, declaring the Nature and Grounds of the Juftification of Abraham, that he was juftified no other way, but that which he had before declared , namely by Grace through Faith in Chrift Jefus, verf. 3. Abraham believed God (in thePromïfe ofChrift and his Mediation) and it was counted unto him for righteouf- nef, verf. 3. He was juftified by Faith in the way before defcribed (for other Juftification by Faith there is none) in oppofition unto all his own Works, and Perfonal Righteouf nefsthereby.. 3. From the fame Teftimony he declares how he came to be Partaker of that Righteoufnefs whereon he was juftified before God, which was by imputation 3 it was counted or im- puted. 453
