But the gueftion is, whether they are Godly or Vngodly antecedently in any moment of time unto their Juttification ; if they are confidered as Godly, and are fo indeed, then the Apoftles words are not true, that God jusifieth the ungodly ;for the contradiEtory Propofition is true, God juflifieth none but the Godly. For thefe Propofitions,. God juflifieth the ungodly, and God juftifieth none but the Godly, are contradiétory. For here are exprefly .i i eyms & grápamsávvexe-iupcu, which is dap' egms Wherefore, although in and with the Juftification of a Sinner, he is made Godly, for he is endowed with that Faith which purifieth the heart, and is a vital Principle of all Obe- dience, and the Confcience is purged from Dead Works by the Blood of Chrift ; yet antecedently unto his Juftification he is ungodly and confidered as ungodly, as one that worketh not, as one whofe Duties and Obedience contribute nothing unto his Juftification. As he worketh not, all works are excluded from being the caufa per paw; and as he is umgod y,from being the caufa fine qua non of his Juftification. The ,qualification of the subject, or the means on the part of the perron to be juftified, and whereby he becomes atu ally fo to be, is Faith or believing. But believeth on him who juffifaeth the ungodly. That is, itAs Faith alone. For it is the Faith of him who morketh not ; and not only fo, but its efpe dial objet, God as juftifying the ungodly, is exclufive of the concomitancy of any works whatever. This is Faith alone , or it is impofible to exprefs Faith alone, without the literal ufe of that word alone. But Faith being afferted, in oppofition unto all works of ours, unto him that worketh not, and its efpecial nature declared in its efpe- cial objet, God as jqffifying the ungodly, that is, freely by his Grace, through the Redemption that is in Chrift Jefus, no place is left for any Works to make the leaft approach to- N n n wards,
