458 the nature of Yuflifacation, as declared wards our Juftification before God, under the covert of any diftinction whatever. And the nature of Juftifying Faith is here allo determined. It is not a meer dent unto Divine Revelations ; it is not fuch a firm dent unto them, as fhould caule us to yield Obedience unto all the Precepts of the Scripture, though thefe things are included in it ; but it is a believing on, and uniting unto him that pill ifreth the ungodly, through the Mediation of Chrift. Concerning this Perfon, the Apoftle atirmeth that his Faith k counted for Righteoufneff. That is, he is juftified in the way and manner before declared. But there is a diffe- rence about the Sence of thefe words. Some fay, the meaning of them is, that Faith as an Ait, a Grace, a Duty or Work of ours, is fo imputed. Others fay, that it is Faith as it apprehends Christi and his Righteoufnefs, which is properly imputed unto us, that is intended. So Faith they fay jufti- fieth, or is counted for Righteoufnefs relatively, not properly, with refpet unto its obje6t'5 and fo acknowledg a Trope in the words. And this is fiercely oppofed as though they denied the exprefs words of the Scripture when yet they do but interpret this exprefiìon once only ufed , by many others, wherein the fame thing is declared. But thofe who are for the firft fenfe, do all affirm that Faith here is to be ta- ken as including Obedience or works, , either as the form and effence of it, or as fuch necefary concomitants as have the fame influence with it into our Juftification, or are iñ the fame manner the condition of it. But as herein they admit allo of a Trope in the words which they fo fiercely blame in others, fo they give this fenfe of the whole , unto him that worketh not, but believeth in him that juftifieth the ungodly , his Faith and works are counted to him for Righteoufnefs; which is not only to deny what the Apoftle affirms, but to affign unto him a plain con.tradiaion.
