in the Epißles of S. Paul, &c. fit any, but only that the effects of that one offence were not confined unto one : And if we inquire who, or how many thole many are, the Apoftle tells us, that they are all Men univerlally , that is, all the potferity of Adam. By this one offence, becaufe they all finned, therein they are all dead ; that is, rendered obnoxious and liable unto death, as the punithment due unto that one offence. And hence allo it appears, how vain it is to wreft thofe words of Ver. 12. In as much as all have (,finned, unto any other fin, but the firft fin in Adam ; feeing it is given as the reafon why death paffed on them, it being here plainly affirmed, That they are dead , or that death paffed on them by that one offence. The efficacy 2ezeio-ttell& of the free gift oppofed here- unto, is expreffed, as that which abounded much more. Be- tides the thing it fell afferted, which is plain and evident, the Apoftle feems to me to argue the equity of our yuftifica- tion by Grace, through the obedience of Chrtl, by com- paring it with the condemnation that befel us by the fin and difobedience of Adam. For if it were jufr, meet, and equal that all Men íhould be made fubjeû unto condemnation for the fin of Adam ; it is much more fo, that thofe who believe, fhould be juftified by the obedience of Chrift, through the grace and free donation of God. But wherein, in particular the gift by Grace, abounded urto many, above the efficacy of the fall to condemn, he declares afterwards. And, that whereby we are freed from condemnation, more eminently then we are made obnoxious unto it by the fall and fin of Adam, by that alone .we are juflified before God. But this is by the grace of God, and the gift by Grace, through jefus chrill alone; which we plead for Ver. t6. Another difference between the comparates is expreffed , or rather the intiance is given in particular of the dimilitude afferted in general before. 473 n p p And
