478 The nature of f of iffcation, as declared for that which receiveth, and that which is received, are not the fame. 3. Where there is A4,,,3E'a ; ?p, and x4es 1 aydb'ouget; abounding grace, fiiperabounding grace, exerted in our Juftifi- cation, no more is required thereunto. For how can it be laid to abound, yea, to fuperabound, not only to the freeing of us from condemnation ; but the giving of us a title unto life, if in any thing it is to be fupplied , and eeked out by works and duties of our own. The things intended do fill up thefe expreílions, although to force they are but an empty noife. 4. There is agift of Righteoufnefs required unto our Jufti- fication, which all muff receive, who are to be juftified. And all are juftified who do receive it ; for they that receive it fhall reign in life by Jefus Chrift. And hence it follows, .(r.) That the Righteoufnefs whereby we are juftified be- fore God, can be nothing of our own, nothing inherent in us, nothing performed by us. For it is that which is freely given us, and this donation is by imputation : Blef d is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth Righteoufnefs, Chap. 4. 6. And by Faith we receive what is fo given and imputed, and otherwife we contribute nothing unto our participation of it. This it is to be juftified in the fente of the Apoftle, (2.) It is fuch a Righteoufnefs as gives right and title unto eter- nal life. For they that receive it, (hall reign in life. Where- fore it cannot confift in the pardon of fin alone. For (r.) the pardon of fin can in no tolerable fenf be called the gift of Righteoufneff. Pardon of fin is one thing, and Righ- teoufnefs .another. (2.) Pardon offin doth not give right and title unto eternal life. It is true, he whole fins are par- doned (hall inherit eternal life ; but not meerly by vertue of that pardon, but through the imputation of Righteouf- nefs which doth infeparably accompany it, and is the ground of it.
