To mix any thing with Faith herein, as it is repug- nant unto the nature of Faith and Works, with refpett unto their aptitude and meetnefs, for the attaining of a Righ- teoufnefs, fo it is as direétly contradictory unto the ex- prefs defign and words of the Apoftle, as any thing that can be invented. Let Men pleafe themfelves with their diftinaions which I underftand not (and yet perhaps fhould be a(hamed to fay fo, but that I am perfwaded they underftand them not them- felves, by whom they are ufed) or with cavils, objections, feigned confequences, which I value not Here Mall for ever defire to fix my Soul, and herein to acquieCce 5 namely, That chrifl is the end of the Law for Righteoufnefs, to every one that doth believe. And I do fuppofe, that all they who un- derftand aright what it is that the Law of God doth require of them, how needful it is that it be complied withal, and that the end of it be accomplifhed, with the utter infuffici- ency of their own endeavors unto thole ends, will, at leaft, when the time of difputing is over, betake themfelves unto the fame refuge and reft. But of him areye in Chrifi yefus, who of God is made unto to Wifdom, and Righteoufnefs, and santfificati- on, and Redemption. The defign of the Apoftle in thefe words is to manifeft, that whatever is wanting unto us on any account that we may pleafe God, live unto him, and come to the inj .yment of him, that we have in and by Jelüs Chaff: And this on the part of God from meer, free, and fbvereign Grace, as per. 26, 27, 28, 29. do declare.
