498 The nature of Yuf zfcation, as declared by vertue of our inftion or implantation in him; á, from of, or by him. He by his Grace is the principal efficient caufe hereof. And the effe& is, that we in Chri1f Yefus that is engrafted in him, or united unto him, as Members of his My (heal Body, which is the conftant fenf of that expref- fion in the Scripture. And the benefits which we receive hereby are enumerated in the following words. But firft the way whereby we are made partakers of them, or they are communicated unto us, is declared ; who of God is made unto us. It is fo ordained of God, that he himfelf (hall be made or become all this unto us, `bs k241,49 >, WIC ate` o:g', where ate, denotes the efficient caufe, as i4 did before. But how is Chrift thus made unto us of God, or what a t of God is it that is intended thereby. Socinus fays it is a General atl of the providence of God, whence it is come to pat, or is fo fain out, that one way or other the Lord Chrifi fhould be faid to be 411 this unto to. But it is an efpecial Ordinance and Inftituti- on of Gods fovereign Grace and Wifdom, defigning Chrift_ to be all this unto us, and for us, with ghat Imputation thereon, and nothing elk, that is intended.. Whatever in- tereft therefore we have in Chrift, and what ever benefit we have by him, it all depends on the fovereign Grace and con flitution of God , and not on any thing in our felves. Whereas then we have no Righteoufnef of our own, he is ap- pointed of God to be our Righteoufnefs, and is made fo un- to us; which can be no otherwife, but that his Righteoufnefs is made ours. For he is made it unto us (as he is likewife the other things mentioned) fo as that all boafiing, that is in our felves, {hould be utterly excluded, and that he thatglorieth, fhould'glory in the Lord, Ver. 29, 31. Now there is filch a Righteoufnefs, or filch a way of being righteous whereon we may have fòmewhat to Gl >ry, Rom+ 2. And which Both not exclude Nailing, chap. 3. 27.
