500 The nature ofufßification, adeclared this place, is abfolutely diftinó from his being made SanJi- fîcation unto us, which is that Inherent Righteoufnefs which is wrought in us by the Spirit and Grace of Chrift. And his working Perfonal Righteoufnefs in us, which is our Sanéti- fication, and the Imputation of his Righteoufnefs unto us, whereby we are made righteous before God, are not only confittent , but the one of them cannot be without the other. 2. He pleads, That Chrifi is Paid to be made Righteoufnefs unto us, as he is made Redemption. Now he is our Redempti- on, becaufe he hath redeemed us. So is he faid to be made Righ- teoufnefauto r s, becaufe by him we become righteous ; or as an- other (peaks, Becaufe by him alone we are juilified. This is the fame plea with the former, namely, that there is a metonymy of' the effel1 for the caufe in all thefe exprefíions ; yet what caufe they intend it to be, who expound the words By hint alone we are jullified, I do not underftand. But Bellarmine is approaching yet nearer the Truth, for as Chrift is Paid to be made of God, Redemption unto us, becaufe by his Blood we are redeemed, or freed from Sin, Death, and Hell, by the ran - fome he paid for us, or have redemption through his Blood, even the forgivenefs of fins: So he is faid' to be made Righ- teoufnefs unto us, becaufe through his Righteoufnefs granted unto us of God (as Gods making him to be Righteoufnefs unto us, and our becoming the Righteoufnefs of God in him; and the Imputation of his Righteoufnefs unto us, that we may be righteous before God are the fame) we are juftified. His third anfwer, as was before obferved, grants the whole of what we plead.
