Chap. 5. 6, 7, 8, 9, lc, II. Chap. 6. 30. Chap. 8.2. And they never omit the prepofition, unlefs they name the Sacrifice, as thr, ;7hs cit.agAac This is obferved alto by the Apoítle the new Teftament. For twice expreffing the Sin offering by this word, he ufeth that phrafe cu& 4tarrías Rom. 8.3. Heb. io. 6. But no where ufeth ciyagria, to that purpofe. If it be therefore of that fignification in this place , it is fo here alone. And whereas fome think, that it anfwers Piaculumin the Latine, it is alfo a miftake, for the firft fignificationof áu «QTR« is confeffed to be fin, and they would have it fuppofed that thence it is abufed to fignifie a Sacrifice for fin. But Piaculum is properly a Sacrifice, or any thing whereby fin is expiated or fatisfa &ion is made for it. And very rarely it is abufed to denote filch a fin or crime as deferves publick expiation, and is not otherwife to be par- doned , fo Virgil DiAdit in feram commiffa Piacula mortem. But we (hall not contend about words, whileft we can agree about what is intended. The only enquiry is, how God did make him to be fin. He bath made him to be fin ; fo that an a6t of God is intended. And this is elfewhere expreffed, by his laying all our;Iniquities upon him, or caufing them to meet on him, Ifa. 53. 6. And this was by the Imputation of our fins unto him, as the fins of the people were put gn the Head of the Goat that they fhouldbe no more theirs but his, fo as that he was to carry them away from them.
