And fo much weight doth the Apostle lay on this exclulion of Works from our Juftification, as that he affirms That the admittance of it overthrows the whole Cofpel , Ver. 21. For, faith he, if Righteotsfnefs be by the Law, then is Chriii dead in vain 5 and it is dangerous venturing on fo (harp a fence. Not this, or that fort of Works; not this, or that manner of the performance of them ; not this, or that kind of in- tereft in our Juftification, but all work, of what fort foever, and however performed , are excluded from any kind of confideration in Four Juftification, as our Works or Duties of Obedience. For there Galatians whom the Apottle re- proves, defired no more, but that in the Juftification of a Believer, Works of the Law or Duties of obedience, might be admitted into a conjunetion or copartnerthip with Faith in Chrift :efue. For that they would exclude Faith in hint, and of sign Juftification unto Works without it, nothing is intimated, and it is a foolifh imagination. In oppofition hereunto he pofitively afcribes our Juftification unto Faith in Chri/t alone : Not by Works but by Faith, is by Faith a- lone. That the Particles iáv r.a are not exceptive, but ad verfative, hath not only been undeniably proved by Prote- ftant Divines, but is acknowledged by thofe of the Romani Church, who pretend unto any modefty in this Controverfie.
