536 The nature of yuf ication, as declared handles in his Epiftle unto the Galatians, was exprefly about the Works of them that did believe. For he doth not dif- fpute againft the yews, who would not be preffed in the leaft with his Arguments, namely, that if the inheritance were by the Law, then the promu e was of none effe lc; and if Righteoufnefs were by the Law, then did Chrift die in vain: For thefe things they would readily grant. But he fpeaks unto them that were Believers, with refpe& unto thole Works which they would have joyned with Chrift and the Gofpel, in order unto Juftification. (6.) If this were the mind of the Apoftle , that he would exclude one fort of Works, and afl'ert the neceflity of another unto the fame end, why did he not once fay fo , efpecially conf dering how neceffary it was that fo he fhould do, to anfwer thole objeaions againft his doárine which he himfelf takes notice of, and returns anfwer unto on other grounds, without the leaft intimation of any fuch diiftinfion. Bellarmine confidereth this Teftimony in three places, Lib. r. cap.i8. Lib.i. cap.ig. Lib.5.cap.5. De juflfficat. And he returns three anfwers unto it, which contain the fubftance of all that is pleaded by others unto the lame purpole. i. He faith, That the Righteoufnefs which is by the Law, and which k oppofed unto the Righteoufnefs which is by Faith, is not the Righ- teoufnef written in the Law, or which the Law requires, but a Righteoufnefs wrought without the aid of Grace, by the know- ledge of the Law alone. 2. That the Righteoufnefs which is by the Faith of ehrifi, are opera noftra jufta falta ex fide, our own righteous Works wrought in Faith, which others call our Evangelical Works. (3.) That it is blafphemous to call the Duties of Inherent Righteoufnes Y. Jcara lofs and dung. But he labors in the fire with all his fophiftry. For as to the firft, (i.) That by the Righteoufnefs which is by theLaw, the Righteoufnefs which the Law requires, is not intended, is a bold affertion , and exprefly contradiaory unto the Apoftle,
