Iknow not what the moft maliciousDevill inHell(if they have degrees of malice) can invent more fui- table toweakenthe Faith ofmen,as to the accomplifhment ofGodsPromife, then by affirming, that it doth not depend upon his Truth andFaithful- nefl'e, but folely on their good behaviour, which he doth not effellu-. ally provide, that it fhall be fuch, as is required thereunto; God him- felfe bath long face determined this difference , might he be attended unto. But becaufeMr Goodwin bath taken great paines, bothin the generali, to prove the unfuitableneffe ofour Doetrine to the promotionof Obedience, and anHoly Converfationi and in particular, its inconfiffency with the Ex- hortations and Threatnings ofthe Words-managed by theOrdinances ofthe Miniftry. What is needful farther tobeadded,to thepurpofe in hand, will fall in with our vindication & refcuing of the Truth from the falfe crimina- tions, wherewith it is affaulted, and reproached, as to this particular: And therefore I(hall immediately addreffe myfelfe to the Confiderationofhis long ¡ndi&ment, and chargeagainftthe Do&rine ofthe Perfeveranceofthe Saints, as to this very thing.
