56 The Duty of Believers with which he was created, and whereby he is enabled to glorifie God , which is the end of him and them , with- out a confent and conjun&ion in the Wor[hip of God in Communion and Society, as hath beenproved before. 2. The way whereby this is to bedone, God hath de- clared and revealed fromthe beginning , by the Confii- tutionof a Church-flee, throughthe addition of Arbitra- ry Inftitutions of Worfhip , unto what was required by theLawof Nature. For this gives the true Efate, and is the formal reafon of a Church, namely,a Divine Addition of Arbitrary Inftitutionsof Wor[hip, unto the neceffary Di&ates of the Lawof Nature, unto that end. And the efpecial natureof any Churchfiate, doth depend on the efpecial nature of thofe Inftitutions, which is conftitutive of the difference between theChurchfiate of the Old Teftament and that of the new. 3. Such a ChurchBate was conftituted and appointed under the Old Teftament, founded in and on an efpecial Covenant between God and thePeople., Exod. 24. Un- to this Church every one that would pleafe God,and walk before him, was bound to joyn himfelf, by the ways and means that he had appointed for that end ; namely, by Circunsc f on , and their laying hold on the Covenant of God, Exod. 12. 48. Ifa. 56.4. And,this joyning unto the Church, is called joyning unto the Lord,Ifa. 5 6.6. Prem.; 50.5. as being the means thereof; without which it could not be done.
