`alder the Old Teflament. hither; put of thy Iheoes from thy feet for the place whereon thou Handel} io ho'p .gr unay. Moreover befáid, I.ai the God ofthy Father; the God ofAbraham, the God oflf'aa:; ni the God ofJacob; andMofes hid hkface, forhe Mac afraid to look upon God. And here- in allo have we expreffed another gloriousappearance of the Son of God. He who is -here revealed; iscalled Jehovah, v. 4. And he affirms of himf, If, that he is the God ofAhraham, v: 6. who alit, defcribes himfelf by the glorious Name of I AM, that I AM; v. 14. in whore Name and Authority Moles' dealt withPharaoh in the deh- veranee of the People, and whom theywere to ferve on that Mountain upon their comingout of Egypt. He whofe Fin, or mere/Tut/pod-will, Mfesprayes tor, Deut. 33.37.16. And yet he is exprefly called an Angel, v..2. namely, theAngel of the Co- venant, thegreat Angel of the Prefence of God, in whom was the Name and Nature of God ; and he thus appeared, that. the Church might know and confider Who it was that was to work out. their fpiritual and eternal falvation, whereof. that deli- veranee which-then he would affeEt was a Type and Pledge. Aben Ezra would have the Angel mentioned, v. a. to be another from him who is called the Lord God, v. 6. But the Text will not give countenance unto any filch diftin6lion , but (peaks of one and the fame perfon throughout without any alteration ; and this was noother but theSon ofGod: Exod. r9. v. IS, 19, 2e.. AndMount Sinai was altogether'cn a _ /make becanfe the 4. 15; Lord defeended uponit iii Fire; and the, fmole thereof afended as the ftoke. of a Furnace, and the *bole Mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the Trùmpet foundedlong, and waxed lourder and to*der, Mofesfpake, andGod anfivered him by a vice : And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the Mount. The Jews well interpret thole words concerning the defçent ofGod, tobe by way of the manifeltationofhis Glory, not change' of place. And thence Aben Ezra interprets that exprefsion, Chap.zo.v.aa. Tebave feen that I havetalked withyou from Heaven ; God was frill in Heaven, when his Glory was on theMount. Yet thofe words n' ,Ctort F't do rather refer to his defcent beforé,defcribed, then denote the place wherehe fpake. ' For in giving the-Law God fpake on Earth, Heb; r a. 25. That God in this glorious manifeffatioñ Of his Pre- fence onMount Sinai, made ufe of the miniflry of Angels, both thenature of the thing declares, and the Scriptureteftifies, Pfalm68.17. The voices, fire, trembling of the Mountain, fmoke and voile of the-Trumpet, were all effeéred by them. And fo alfo, was the forming of the words of the Lawconveyed unto the ears ofMofes and -the People. Hence the Law is not only laid to be received by them,.dç dhaTayds dyy5Tedv, Alls7.v:53. by the diffJrion, or orderly minifiries oftheAngels, and to bedifpofèd by them into the hand of Moles, Gal. 3. v. 19. but is alto called, ó 8i eWtiano T,An92ìt .'sye , Heb. 2. v. 2. the word, fpoken or pronounced by Angeli, that is outwardly and audibly. As to him that prelded and ruled the whole a&ion,:fonie Chrifliana think it was a createdAngel, reprefentingGod, and fpeaking in his name. But if this be fo, we have no certainty of any thing that is affirmed in the Scripture; that it may be referred direEtlyand immediately unto God v but we may'wlien we plcafi fubftitute a delegatedAngel in his room. For inno place, not in that concerning the Creation of the world is God himfelf more exprefly fpoken of. Betides, the Pfolmifl in the place mentioned, affirms that when thofe Chariots of God were on Mount Sinai, Jehovah himfelf was in the middeft of them. And this 'Pretence ofGod, the Hebrews call 71777 and Pinto and `cps', whereby they now underfand a Majeflaticall and San- sbfying Prefence ; indeed it intends him who is the Brightnefl of the Fathersglory, and the exprefi image of his Perron, who was delegated unto this work as the great Angel of the Covenant, giving the Law in the ftrength of the Lord, in the Malefty eif thename ofthe Lord his God. Exod. 23. v. so, 21, 22. Behold Ifindan Angelbefore' theeto step thee in the *ay, and 51. t bä to bring thee into theplace that Ihaveprepared. Beware ofhim, and obey his voyce, provoke him not, for hewill not pardon .your tranfgrefens, for my name is inhim. But ifthou (halt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I(peak thenwill Ibe an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adverfaty unto thine adverfaries. TheAngel herepromifed, is he that went in the midit of the People in the Wilderuefs, whole Glory appeared and was tnanifefred among them. And moreover another Angel is promifed unto them, 0. 23: For mine Angel frailgo before thee, and bring thee into the Amorites, andI will eui. them off; it is aminifrringAngel to execute the Judgements and vengeanceofGod upon the enemies ofhis people. And thàt this Angel of v. 23. is,another from that of v. 20. appears fromChap. 33. v,2, 3. compared with V. 13, 14, 15, 16, of the fame Chapter, s;'2. 1 will
