V E R . I Z. Ep/de to the HEBREW s. of Chrift, or companionto the fouls ofmen, which the Lord Chrift will not praffitt to the gifts of hisSpirit to make them ferviceable unto. And fundry other caufes of this failure may be affigned. It is no otherwife as to the next degree in this order, in reference unto f#iritualgifts and Paving grace. When theregifts ,in thegood pleafure ofthe Lordofthem are fuper- added unto the naturalend rcmentsbefore mentioned, they carry on them, who have received them, cheerfully, comfortablyand ufefully in their way and progrefs. The former are increafed, heightned, fttengehned and perfeéted by the latter, towards that fpecial end, whereunto themfelves are deugned s namely, the glory of Chrift in the work of the Gofpel. But if thefe alfoare not in due Caron quickned by Caving grace, ifthc heart be not moijtned and madefruitful thereby, even they allo will wither and decay. Sin and the world inproceflof time willdevour them, whereof we have daily ex- perience in this world. And this is the Order wherein the Great Lordof all thereGifts hath laid them in a fubferviency,' one kind unto another, and all of them unto his own glory. And this that hath been fpoken will abundantlydifcover the reafon and ground of the Ap>Jtolical Exhortation, Covet the befgifts, I Cor. 12. 31. As tirft, the gift of Wi f dom and knowledge in theWord and Will ofGod, 1 Cor. 12.8. 1 Cor..2. 7. I Tim: 3. 15.1 Car. a. 5. ' Secondly, the gift ofAbility, to manageand improve this wifdom and knowledge to the edification of others, Heb. 3. 13. chap. 10.25. Rotn. 15. 14. í 7hef:5. Thirdly,ofPrayer. And many more might be addedofthelike ufefulnels and importance. - IV. 3. To clofeour confederations ofthis part ofthe Lordfhip ofChrift, there remains only that we thew him to be the Lord pf all Spiritual Eternal things, which in one word wecall Glory. He is himfelfthe Lordofglory, 2Cor. 2.4. and the Judge ofall, Job. 5.25. In the difcharge ofwhich Officehe givesout Glory as a Reward untohis followers, Mattb. 25. 32. "Korn. 4.1o. Glory is the reward that is withhim; which he will give out it thelaic day, as a Crown, z 2im. a,. 8. Job. 17.2. And to this end that he might be Lordofit, he hath (1) purchafed it, Heb.9.12. And this is a thort viewofthe Lordfhip ofChrift, asto things Spiritual. V. Ecckfiaffical things, or things that concern Church Inftitutions, Rule and Power, belong alfo untohis Rule and Dominion. He is the only Head, Lord, Ruler, and Law- giver of his Church. There was a Church !fate ever fence God created man on the earth; and there is the fame reafon ofit in all its alterations, as unto its Relation to the LordChrift. What ever changes.it under-went, (till Chrift was the Lord of it, and of all its concernments. But by wayof inflance and eminency, we may confider the Mofaical Church jiare under the old Teftament, and the Evangelical Churchjfate under the New. Chrift is Lord of, and in refpe6t unto them both. 1.He was the Lord ofthe OldTeftament Church fiate, and he exercifed his Power and Lordfhip towards it four ways. . 1. In, and by its Injtitution and Ereétion; he made, framed, Jet up, and appointed that Church flare, and all, theWorfhipofGod therein obferved. He it was who ap- pearedunto Mofes in the Wilderneß, Exod. 3.5. Ali. 7. 22, 35. andwho gave them the LawonMount Sinai, Exod. zo Pfal. 68. 17. Ephef. 4. 8. and continued with themin the Wildetnefs, Numb.zt.6. 1 Cor. so. 9. So that from him, hisPower and Authority, wasthe Inftitution and Eredion ofthatChurch. z. By prefcribing a complete Rule and form ofWorfhip and obedienceunto it, being erected, as its Law-giver, towhich nothing might beadded, Dent. 7. 4, 12, 32. 3. By way ofReformation, when it was collapfed and decayed, Zech. 2.8, 9, 10,11, /2,13. Mal. 3,1,2, 3. 4. By way ofAmotion, or taking downwhat hehimfelf hadat up ; becaufe it was fo framedandordered as tocontinue only for afiaftu, Heb. 9. Io. Deut. 18.16, 17, 18. Hag. 2.6,7. Ifa. 65.17, 18. -z Pet. 3. 13. Which part ofhis Power and Lordfhip, we (hall afterwards abundantlyprove againft the Jews. 2.Of theNewTeftament Evangelical Churchffate alfo,he is the only Lead and Ruler yea, this is hisproper Kingdom, on whichall other parts of his Dominion do depend i for he is given to bebead over all things unto the Church, Ephef: I. 22. For, 1. He is the foundation of this Church (fate, I Cor. 3, I I. the whole defign and plat form ;9.
