Thewords, aswas (hewed before, denote the Divine Nature ofCbriii, yet not. ab- flutely, but as God the Father inhim doth manifeft himfelf unto us. Elias in 7-Obi gives us fomewhat another account of the Application of that name, in the root; C1R.31]1 a1U iltu Witt; ply 'y ;into wpm 11115: 41'11 1N17 , The Rabbins of bleffid memory called theholy Ghoff Shechinah, becaufe be dwelt upon the Prophets. But that this is not fo, may be obferved throughout the Targum, wherein the holy Gholt is always exprefly called w1p;t till : and the Shechinah is fpokenof in fuch places as cannot be applied unto him. This then is that whereof the Apofile minds the Jews. God having promifed to dwell among( them by his glorious Prefence, from whence the very name of Jera- falem was called, TheLord it there,Ezell, 48. 35. hewho in and under that name was with them, as Pent by Jehovah, Zech.1.8. was the Son, in whom he had now foken unto them in theft latter days. And this mutt needs beofweight with them, being in- ftrufled, that he who had revealed the Will ofGod unto them, was noneother but he who had 'dwelt among them from the beginning, reprefeenting in all things the Perfon of the Father, being typically revealedunto them, as the brigbtneß ofhis glory. . TheApofile addes, that he is xe(ezrAf Jsosdaeon ¿orê, the exprefs figure or image of his Perfan; that is,ofthe Perlonof God the Father. I Shall not enter into anydifpute about the meaning of the word HypoJlafie, or the difference between it and .iaía. Many controverfies about theft wordsthere were of old. And Hieromwas very cau- tious about acknowledging threeHyoffaJes in the Deity, and that becaufe he thought the word in this 'place todenote fubJfantia, andofthat mindare many 1hll, it being to rendred bythe Vulgar Tranflation. But the confederation of thefe vexed,effians tending not to the opening ofthe defignof the ApoJfle and meaning ofthe holy Ghoft in this place, I lhall not infect upon them. The a. Hypoffafis ofthe Father, is the Father himfelf. Hereof, or ofhim, is the Son Paid to be the expreßimage. As is theFather, fo is the Son. And this agreement, likenefs and convenieng, between the Father and the Son, is Ejlintial, not Accidental; as thofe things are betweenrelations finite and corporeal. What theFather is, doth, hath; that the Son is, doth, bath ; or elfethe Father as the Father could not befall, fatisfied in him, nor reprefentedby him. 2. That islaid of him, he oep(Dñ ©es" :asdexedr, being; exiting, fubfiiking in the form of. God; that is, beingfo,.efntially fo; for there is no bow), or Form in theDeity, but what is Efntialunto it. This he'was abfolutely, an- tecedently unto his Incarnation. Thewhole Nature ofGod being in him,. and con- fequently he being in the FormofGod. 2.
