6q. c+n.n Expofitaori of the CH AP. I. 7homat, Lyramu, Cajetan,Efflux, Riberi, A, Lapide, all defert their own Text, and 'ex- pound the words according to the Original : TheAncients alto as Chryfolfom,'Theo- philatï, and Oecumenius, lay the chief weight of their whole Expofition of thisplace, en the words omitted in that Tranflation. . The doctrine of purging our fins by Chrift, is deepand large, extending its felfun- tomany weighty heads ofthe Gofpel : but we [hall follow ourApoffle, and in this place país it over briefly and in general, becaufe the confiderationof it will direly occur unto us in our progrefs: Two things the Apofile here exprefferh concerning theMjfshi and one, which is the foundation of both the other he implyeth or fuppofeth. Era, He expreffethWhat he did ; he purged ourfins : Secondly, How he did it, he did it by himfelf. That which he fuppofeth as the foundation of both there is, that he was the Great High Prieff of the Church ; they withwhom he dealt knowingfull well that thismatter of purging fins, belongedonly unto the Priefa. Here then the Apoffle tacitely enters upon a Comparifon ofChriff with Aaron, the HighPrieft; as he had done before with all the Prophetical Revealers of theWill of God ; and as he named none ofthem in particular, nomore doth he herename Aaron; but afterwards when he comes more largely to infili on the fame matter again, he ex-, prefly makes mentionof his name, as alfo ofthat ofMotes. And in both the things here afcribed unto him as the great High Prieft of his Church doth he prefer him above Aaron. Fieff, k that he purged our fins s that is, reallyand effeâually beforeGod,and in the Confcience ofthe (inner, and that for ever. Whereas the Purgation of fins about whichAaron wasemployed, was in its felt but typical, external, and reprefentative ofthat which was trueand real, bothofwhich the Apoffle proves at large afterwards. Secondly, In that he did it by himfelf, or the uttering of himfelf; whereas whit ever Aaron did of this kind, he did it by the efring of the bloodofBulls andGoats, as (hall be declared. And hence appears alfo the vanity of the Glofs of a learned man on thefe words; pofiquam, faith he, morte fua eaufam didit ejus fidei per tluam à peccatis purgamur, quod nec Motesfecerat,,nec Prophets. For as we thall fee that Chrifts purgingof our fins, doth not çonfifi in giving a ground and caufi for faith , whereby we purge our felves, fo theApoffle is not comparingthe Lord Chrift in theft words with Mofès and the Prophets, who hadnothing todo in the work ofpurging fin, bat withAaron who by Office was defigned thereunto. xaeopía Let us then fee what it is that is here afcribed unto the Lord Chrift.
