Vs R, 3. Ely le to the_H E BREWS. liy naAarl(m, topurge, as Exod. a9.37. andChap.30 10. So alfo in other Authors, xaeawotaic is ufed for aísartaa, aaÿiadtiaraa, that is, expiatio, expiamentum, piacnlum; Expiation, Attonement, diverfiotï of guilt. So Lucian, ei4ouee nit ¿orate w Xrnµvé 'Xmearso¡aóY Tat semi; ïr Pµ P, We raft bim down headlong for an expiation of the Army: or as one that by his death fhould expiate, bear, take away the guilt of the Army. And fuch Luftrations were common among the Heathen, when Porfonsdevoted them- felves to deftrution, or were devoted by others, to purge, luftrate, bear the guilt of 'any, that theymight go free ; fuch were Codius, Menaceus, and the Dedi, whofe flo- -ries are known. This purging then of our fins , which the Apoftle declareth tohave been effeáedbefore the 4/Coition of Chrill, and hisfitting down at the Right Hand of God, confifteth not in the aétual Santlification and Purification of believers, by theSpirit in the Application of the blood ofChrift unto them, but in the Attonement made by him in the Sacrifice of him1lf, thatour fins íhould not be imputed unto us. And therefore is he Paid to purge our fins, and not to purge of from our fins. And where everfins, not finners, are made the Obje& of any Mediatory ads ofChrift, that a& immediately refpeðGod andnot the firmer, and "intends theremoval of fin, fo as that it fhould not be imputed. So Ghap. z. 17. of this Epittle t he is a merciful High Prieft; eia rE iMiZte.at TÇt . oatrlee 473 caê, to reconcile the finsofthepeo- ple; that is, b alvice 5ß.t °r a6;. 111* o 1 ci{uaer:w "Y, to make Attonement or Reconciliationwith God for the fins of thepeople. So that Xaeavaia4 amnoáµee@ Y, civarTU"uY ni e ; is as much, as baringmade attonement for our fins. And this the Apoftic further declareth by manifefiingthe Waywhereby he did it ; that is, di ìiw7 , by himfelf, that is, by the Sacrifice and Offering of ,himfelf; as.Chap. 9.14. Ephef. g. 2. TheHigh Prieft ofold madeAttonement, and typically purged the fins of thePeople, by facrificing of Beallr according unto the Appointment of the Law,Levit. 16. This High Prieft by the Sacrifice of bimfflf, Ifs. 43. 10. Ileb. 9.12. Of the nature ofPropitiatory or ExpiatorySacrifices, we mutt treat at large afterwards: We keep our felves now, unto the Apoltlesgeneral Propofition, exprefling brieflythe Sacerdotal.Offce ofChrifl, and the Excellency of it; in that he really purged our fins, and thatby theSacrificeof bimfelf. And this was in and byhis death on theCrofs, with his antecedent preparatory fuffcrings. Soine dif}inguifh between his Death; and theOblation of himfelf. This they fay he performed in Heaven, when as the High Prieft of his Church, he entered into the Holicff not madewith hands, where- unto hisdeath was but a preparation. For the flaying of the Beall, they fay, was not the Saeritice, but the offeringof its blood upon theAlsar, and thecarrying of it in- to the Holy Place. But this utterly overthrows the whole Sacrifice ofChnff, which indeed isthe thing by themaimed'at. It is true, the flaying of the Seaf was not the whaleSacrifice, but only an effntial part of it, as was alto the offering of its blood ; and thefprinkling of it in the holy Place, in the anniverfary Sacrifice of Attonement, but not in anyother. And the Reafon why the whole Sacrifice could not confill in any one AOion, arofe meetlyfrom the imperfellionof the things and perlons employed in that work. The Prieft was one thing, the Beaff to be faerificed another, the Altar another, the Fire onthe Altar another, the Incenfe added another, each of them li- mited and defined nto itspeculiarend, fo that theattonement could notbe made by any one of them, nor the Sacrifice confifi in them. But now in this facrifice of Chrifi all theftmeet in one, becaufeof his Perfe&ion ; He himfelf was both Prieft, Sacrifice, Altar and Incenfe, as we (hall. fee in our progrefs ; and heperfe&ed his whole . facritice at once, in andby his death and blood-fhedding, as the Apoftle evidently de- clares, Chap. 9.52. 14. Thus by himfelfdid Chrift 'purge our fins, making an Attonement for them by the facrifice of himfelf in his death, that they ffiould never be imputed unto them that believe. And this part of thisVerle will afford us allo this diliiná Obfervation. So great was the work of freeing usfrom fin, that it could no otherwifebe ofelled but by the felf- facrifice of the Son ofGod. Out ilpoftle makes it his defsgn inrental places to evince that none of thofe things from 65
