68 , 'einExpoftion of the C H A P. I. I. Confider we may alto the un/ßeakable Love ofChrif in this work ofhisdelivering us from fin. This the Scripture alto abundantly goeth beforéus in ; fetting forth, ex- tolling, commending this Love ofChriJJ, and calling us to an holy'conlideration of it. Particularly it thews it accompaniedtvith all things that may make Love expref ive and tobeadmired. For, Firli, It propofeth the Necej¡ty andExigency of the Condi- tionwherein the Lord Chrilf gave us this relief; that was when we were finner, , when we were loft, when we were Childrenof Wrath, under the Curfe, when no eye 'didpiny us, when no hand could relieve us. And ifJohn mourned greatly, when he thought thatthere was none found worthy in Heaven or Earth to open his 1300k of Vifions, and-to unloofe the feats thereof; how jutfly might the whole Creation mourn. and lament, if there had been none found to yiela,Eelief; when all were obnoxious to this fatal ruine. And this is an exceeding commendation of the love ofChrifi,. that he fet his hand to that work, which none could touch; and pat his (boulders under that' Burden which none elfe could bear, when all lay in a dcfperate condi- tion. Secondly, Thegreatnefllof this delivery it is from Wrath, and Curfe, and Ven- geance,Eternal: Not from a Trouble or Danger of a few dayes continuance, not from a momentary fi ring, but fromEverlaffing Wrath, under the curie of God and power of Satan in the execution of it ; which neceffarily attend fin and .(inners ; And Thirdly, The Waywhereby he did it not by his word whereby he made the world ; not by his Power whereby he juJfdinsand rules the things that he hath made; not by payinga priceobcorruptible;thmgs;not by revealing a way unto us only, whereby we our (elves might efcape that conditionwherein we were, as llame folifbly imagine but by the facrifece of himiIf, making his foul an Offering for fin; and olfiring up him- (elf unto God through the Eternal Spirit ; by laying down his Life for us ; and greater love can no man manifetf thanby fodoing. And Fourthly, The Infinite Conde- fenfion thathe ufed to put himfelf into that condition, wherein by himfelf he might purge our fins. For to this purpofe when he was in theform ofGod, he emptied him- (elf of his Glory, made. himfelf of no account, was madeflefh, took on him -the form of afirvant, that he might be obedient unto death, the death of the Crofs. And Fifthly, The End of his undertaking for us; whichwas the bringing ofus unto God, in- to 'hisLove and Favour here, and the:Eternal Enjoyment of him hereafter. All thefe things, I fay,' doth theScripture infili frequently and largely upon , to fet forth the Exoelency of the Love ofChrifl, to render it admirableand amiable unto 'us ; And thefe thingsthould we lay up in our Hearts and continually ponder them, that we may give due Acceptance and entertainment to this wonderful Love of the Son ofGod. T He Apofle having thus allotted in general the Sacerdotal Office of Chrif, and the Sacrifice that heoffered, with the End of it, becaufe that could not bedone with- out the greateffDejedfion, Humiliation and Abatement ofthe Son, that we maynot conceive, that he was left in, or doth yet abide under the fame Condition, adds the UfaEvent andConfequent'of his great Work and undertaking. Thede- fign andmeaning ofthe Holy Ghofi in them is nextly tobe coufidered. The things tobe enquiredafter to this End, are; Firf; The felpe of the Apollc in thefewords : Secondly, Themanner of his expreffing his intendment; and the particulars therein in- tended. Thirdly, What he related untoin the Mofaical0economy, whereby he ftrengthe- ned the Argument which he had in hand. Twothings theApolile in general defigns in thefewords : Firff, That the Lord Chiïtf undertaking topurge our fins, did by the one offering of himfelfperfellly circa it, fo difcharging the whole work of his Prieffhood, asto the makingAttsnement for fanners. This the bleffed iffue of his undertaking doth de- month-ate; Immediately upon his work, he entered into the Glorious Condition here expreffed; a fignal pledge and Evidence that his Work was perfected, and that God was fully fatisfied, and well pleafedwith what.he had done.
