ER. 6. Egleto the HEnREws. fuperadded fundry new Commands in the Inflitutions of his Worfhip. Wi h tinge/r it is otherwifn. The ingrafted Law of their Creation requiringof them the Worthip of God and Obedience to his whole Will, is kept and prefrved entire ; fo that they have no need to have it repeated and expretfed in vocalfOrmal Commands. And by vertue of this Law, were they obliged to confiant and everlafting Worthip of the Eternal SonofGod, as beingcreated and upheld in an univerfal dependance'upon him. But nowwhen God brings forth his Soninto the world, and placeth himin a new con- dition of being incarnate, and becoming fo the Head of his Church, there is a new Modification of theWorfhip that is due to him brought in, and a now refpeîr unto things not cenfidered in the firft creation. With reference hereunto God gives a new Com- mand unto theAngels, for that peculiar kind ofWorthip and Honour, which due untohim in that hate and condition whichhe had taken uponhimfelf. This the Lawof their Creation ingeneral diretked them unto ; but inparticular re- quired not of them. It enjoyned the Worthip ofthe Sonof God in every condition, but that condition was not expreffed. ThisGod fupplies by a new Command; That is fuch an Intimation of his Mind and Will unto them, as anfwers unto a. vocal Com- mand given unto men, whit by that means only may come to know the Will of God. Thus in one way or other, Command is the Ground and Caufe of all Wor- fhip. For, a. All Worfhip is Obedience; Obediencerefpeéts Authority; and Authority exerts it felf inCommands. And if this Authority be not the Authority of God, the Wor- fhip performed in Obedience unto it, is not the Worfhipof God, but of him or them whole Commands and Authority are the Reafonand caufeof it. It is the Authority of God alone that can make any Weirfhip to be religious , or the performance of it to be anAc`k of Obedience unto him. a. God would never allow that theWill andWifdom ofany ofhis Creatures fhout& be the rife, Rule, or meafure of his Worfhip, or any part of it, or any thing that belongs unto it : ThisHonour he hath referved unto himfelf, neither will he part with itunto any other. Healone knows what becomes his own Greatnefs andHoli- nefs, andwnat tends to the Advancement ofhis Glory. Hence the Scripture abounds with fevere Interdictions and Comminations againft them, who (hall prefumeto do or appoint any thing in his Worfhip befides or beyond his own Inftitution. 3. All Prefcriptions ofWorfhip are vain, where men havenot firengtb to perform it in a due manner, nor Atfurance of Acceptance when it is performed. Now both theft are; andmutt befromGod alone; nor doth he give ffrengtb and ability for any thing in his Worfhip but what himfelf commands ; nor doth he promife to ac- cept any thingbut what is of his ownAppointment ; fo that it is the greateft folly imaginable to undertake any thing in his Worfhip and Service, but what his Ap- pointment gives warrant for. And this (houldteach us in all that wehave to do in theWorfhip ofGod carefully to look after his word of Commandand Inftitution. Without this, all that wedo is loft, as being no Obedience unto God. Yea, it is an open letting up of our own 'Wills and Wifdomagainft him, and that in things of his ownefpecial concernment, which is intolerable bolducih and prefumption. Let us deal thus with our Rulers amongft m n, and obey themnot according to theirLaws but our ownfancies, and feewhethe they will accept our perfons? And is the Great and Holy God lefs to be regarded ? efud hat we have our own Inventions, or the Commands ofother men as the gro nd andYèafon of our eking it, we have nothing At our own or their warranty for its Acceptance with God; and how far this will fecure us, is gaffe tojudge. We might hence alfo farther obferve, V. That theMediator of the Nett' Covenant is inhis own Perlon God beefedfor ever, to whomDivini or Religious Worfhip is due from the Angels themfelves. As allo that, VI. TheFather upon the account of the Work, ofChriff in the World, and hie Kingdom that enfaedir, give,a new Commandmentuntothe Angels toWorfbip him , his Glory being greatlyconcerned therein. And that, VII. Great is the Churches fecuriy andHonour, when the Head of it is wor/bippedby all the Angels inHeaven; as allo that, Xii VIII. le
