118 An Expo ;fiat ofthe CHAP. J. are mt deufe of by the writers ofit, either becaufeof fame agreement and likenefl between the things intended in the one and the other, or beeasrfe offamefubordination. In theformer may, that which is fpoken of the Type, is applied unto the Anti-type ; and fntnetimes for likenefs fake, that which wasfpoken of one thing is applied unto another, as Matth. 15. 7, 8. our Saviour applies thofi words ofIfaiab to the ?relent Jews, which were fpoken oftheir fore- fathers. Anfw. Thatwhich is fpoken in the firfi place ofan infiiteetedType, is alfo fpoken of the Anti-type or things pre- figured by it, fo far as it is repsefented by the Type ; fo thatone thing teaches another, and thereon the words have a double application ; frÍ1 to the Type ; ultimately to the Anti-type. But herein fuch teffinsonies as this have no concernment. 2. The Scripture fometimes makes ufe of Allegories, illunrating one thing by another, as Gal. 4. 21. 22, 23, 24. Neither hath this any place here. 3. That what is fpokenof one, fhould becaufe of forne fimilitude be affirmed to be fpoken ofanother, and nothing agree properly unto him, is untrue, and not to be exemplified with any feerning inflame. 4. The words ofIraiab, chap. 29. 13. which our Saviour makesufe of, Màttb.15.7, 8, 9. were a Propheticof the Jews who then lived, as both our Saviour expretly affirms, and the Context in the Prophet loth plainly declare. Some things he addes, Areapplied unto others than they are f oken cf, becaufe of their fubordination tohim or themof whom they are fpoken. Thus things that are token f God are applied unto Chrift, becaufe ofhis fubordination to him; and of this, faith he, we have an infrance in Ads 13. 47. where thewords fpokenófthe LordChrsjt, If.,. 49. 6. I have fee thee tobea light to the Gentiles, that thou fhouldelt be for falvation to the cods of the earth ; are applied unto the Apofiles hecaufe oftheirfubordination untoCbrifr: And in this cafe the words have but one fenfe, and belong primarily unto him ofwhom they are firff ffioken, and arefecondarily applied unto theother. .4nfw. According to this Rule, there is nothing that everwas fpóken of God, but it maybe fpoken of and applied unto any ofhis Creatures : All things being infub- ordination unto him. At leali it may be foin that wherein they aer under him, and are in a peculiar fubordination to him. And yet neither can fuch a fubordination, ac- cording to this mans Opinion, beapplied untoChrift, who in the Creationof Flea. ven and Earthwas in no other fubordination to God, than any other things not yet made orexifìing ; fo that this Rule, thatwhat isfpoken of God is applied unto them who are infubordination unto him, as it isfalfe in it self, fo it is no way fuited to the prefent Winds; Chrift being in this man's judgment in no fubordination to God when the worldwas made, being abfolutelyin all refpeds in the condition ofthings that were not. Not doth the inftaoce given at all prove or illufIrate what is pretended. The Apo(tle in,the citingofthofe words to the Jews, doth not in the lean apply them to himfelf, but only declares the ground of his going to preach the Gofpel unto the Gentiles ; which was, that God had promifed tomake Him whomhe preached to be a Light, and to bringfalvation unto them alto. Wherefore headdes, 3. what is dire& to his pretenfion, That all the words, or things fgniftedby them in any tlimony, which are firfrlyfpoken ofone, and then are for fume ofthe caufes mentioned, ( that is, conveuiency, fimilitude or fubordination ) appliedunto an- other,are.not to be lookedonasproper to him to whom theyarefit applied; but f much ofthem is tobe admitted as agrees to the(cope ofhim bywhom the teftimony is ufe&: as in the teftimony produced, v.7. I will be untohim a Father, and he (hall be tome a Son; she words immediately followingare, If he (hall offend againft me, I will chafe himwith the rod ofinen ; which words being fpoken ofSolomon, can no wayheapplied unto Chriff. Anfw. What is fpoken ofany Type and of Chrift jointly, is not fofpoken for any naturalconveniency, fimilitude orfubordination, but becaufe of Gods infritution, appoint- Mg theTypefo to reprefent and fhadow out the Lord Chrift, that what he would teach concerning him fhould be fpoken of the Type whereby he was reprefented. Now no perfon that was appointed to be a Type ofthat, being in all things a Type, it is not necetfary that what ever was fpoken ofhimwas alto fpoken of Chrift, but only what was fpoken ofhim under thatformalconfederation of an infiituted Type. This we (hewed the cafe to have beenwith Solomon, of whom the words mentioned were fpoken, as he bare the Perlon ofChrift : Other things beingadded in the fame place, that belongedunto him inhis own perfonally moral capacity. And therefore thole things ( as that, ifhe offendagainft me) are not at all mentioned by theApofrle, as not being fpokenof him as a Type. And thisplainly over- Throws the pretenfionof our Commen- tator;
