How the Apolìleproves his Intendmentby thisTetkimony hath been declared in the opening of the words, and the force of it unto his purpofe lycs open to all ; we may now divert unto thofe Ds lrinal Obfèrvatians which the words offer unto us. As, I. All theProperties of God, confidered in thePerlin f the Son the head of the Church, are fuited to give ReliefConfalation andfupportment untoBelievers in all theireintrefr. This Truth prefects it feif unto us from the uJè of the words in the Pfitm, and their Connection in the defignof the Pfalmàfl.. under the confiderationof his own mortaliay and frailty, hé relieves himfelf with thoughts of the Omnipotency and EternityofChritl ; and takes Arguments from thence to plead for relief. And this may a little further beunfolded for our life in the enfuing Obfervations. r The Properties ofGod are thofe whereby Godmakes known himfelf tous; and declares both what he is, and what we {hall find him to be in all that we have to deal with him He is infinitelyHoly, Jull, Wife, Good, Powerful,&c. And by our Apprehenlion of theft things, are we lead to that Acquaintance with the Nature ofGod which in this life we may attain, Exod. 34. 5, 6, 7. 2. God oftentimes declarer and propofeth thefe propertiesofhis natureunto ur for our flip. ?ailment Goon{olationand Relief in our Troubles, Dittrelfes and endeavours after Peace and Refit to ourfouls. Ifa. 40.27,28, 29, 30, 3 r 3. That face the Entrance of fn, there Properties of God abfoiutely confidered will not yield that Relief and fatiafatlion unto the fouls of men, which they would have done and did, whileft man continued obedient unto God according to the Law of his Creation. Hence Adamupon his fin knew nothing that thould encourage him to coped any help pity or relief from him, and therefore fled from hit pretence andhid himfelf. The KighteoufneßHohnefs,Purity andPower of God all infinite, eternal; un- changeable, confidered abflutely, are noway fuited to the Advantage of inners in any condition, Kom. a. 32. Heb. r. 12. 4. ThfeProperties of the Divine Nature are in every perfonof the Trinity entirely ; fo that eachPerfon is fo infinitely holy, juft, wife, good and powerful, becaufe each perfon is equally partaker of the whole Divine Nature andBeing. 5. The Perfon of the Word, or the Eternal Son ofGod, may be confidered either abfolute= ly as fuch, or as defignedin the Counfel,'W ifdom and Will of the Father, by andwith his owii Will andCofent, unto the work ofMediation between God and Man, Prov. 8. 22, 27, 28, 29, 3o, 3 I. And in him as fuch, it isthat the Properties of the nature of Godare fuited toyield reliefunto Believers in every condition : For, r.It was theVefign.of God in the Appointment of his Son to be Mediator to re' trieve the communion between himfelf and his creature that was loll by fin. Now man was fo createdatfiat, as that every thing inGod was fuited tobe a Rewardun- to him, and in all things to give him fatisfaition. This beingwholly loft by fin, and thewhole Reprefentation of God to man becoming full of dreadand terror, all graci- ous intercourfe in a way offfecial love on the part of God, and Jßiritual willing Obe- dience on the part of man was intercepted and cut off. God deigning again to take finners into a communionofLove and Obediencewith himfelf, it mutt be by Kepre- fenting unto them his blefd Properties as faked to their encouragement, 'fatisfaâion and reward. And this he doth in the Perfon of bis Son , as defigned to beour Mediator, Heb. r. z, 3. For, 2. The Son is defigned to be our Mediator, and the Head of his Church, in a. way of Covenant, wherein there is an Engagement for the exerting of 'all theDivine Proper: ties of the nature of God for the Good and Advantage of them , for whom he bath undertaken, and whom he defigned tobring again into favour and communion with God. HenceBelievers do no more confider the Properties of God in the Perfonof the Son ab(olutely, but as engaged in a way of Covenant for their Good, and is propofed unto them for an everlafting fatisfadory Reward. This is the ground of his calling upon them fo often to behold fee and confider him ; and thereby tobe refre{hed. They confider hisPower, as he is mighty to fave : His Eternity, as he is an everlaftìng Re- ward; his Righteoufnefs, as faithful to juflifie them : All his Properties, as engaged in Covenant for their Good and Advantage. What ever he is in himfif , that he will be to them in a way of Mercy. Thus do the holy Properties of the Divine Mmm 2 Nature
