V it thé Hi BREWS. 179 Difciples,Soh. r7. 19. Sanflifte them by thy Word; as the means and inflruthentof their San6kification. Andhe tells his Aponles, that they were clean through theword that he had ffioken unto them, Chap. 15. 3. For it is the food and nouriJhment whereby the fpiritual PrincipleofLife, which we revive in our Regeneration is cherifhed and en- creafed, 1 Pet. 2.2. and fo able tobuild us up, untill it give us an inheritance among them that are fonliified. Secondly, It is fo in theCommunication of the Spirit unto them that do believe, to furnilh themwith the Gifts and Graces of the Kingdom of Heaven, and to interetl them in all thofe Priviledges of thisfalvation, which God is pleafed in this life to im- part untous, and to entran us withal. So the Apofile dealing with the Galatians about their backflidingfrom the Gofpel, askeththem, whither they received the Spirit by the works of theLaw, or by the Wordof Faith, Chap. 3. 2, that is, the Gofpel. That wastheWay and means whereby God communicated unto them his Spirit; bywtíóm among manyother Priviledges, we are fealedunto the dayof Redemption. This is the Covenant Of God, that his Spirit and theWord of the Gofpel (hall go, and (hall abide together withhis Elea, Ifs. $9. r. And he is given untO us by the Gofpel on màny accounts. ( 1. ) Becaufé heis the gift and grane of the Author of the Gòfpel, as to all the efpe- cial Ends and concernments of falvation; John tells us, that the Spirit wat not given whenjefus wat not asyet glorified, Chap. 7. 39. that is, not in that manner, as God hath annexed unto this falvation: and therefore Peter tells us, that when the Lord Chrift aftended up on high, he received ofthe Father the Promife of the Spirit , and poured him forth on them which did believe, this2.33: And thishe did; according tohis owngreat Promife andPrediEtion, whiten he converted with his Difciples in the dayes of his flefh. There was hot any thing that he more fupported and encouraged them withal, normore raifed their hearts to anEipeétation of, than this; that he would fend unto them, and bellow upon them the HolyGhoß, for many bleffed ends and purpofes, and that to abide With them for ever; as we may fee, Job. 14. 15, 16. And this is thegreat privîledgeof theGofpël, that the Author of it, is alone thedonor and benowet of the Holy Spirit ; which of what concernment it is in the bufinefs of out Salvation , ál1 mien know, who have any acquaintance with thefe thiñgs. ( z. ) Fle is prnmifed in theGofpel, and "therein alone. All the Promifes of the Scri- pture, whither in theOld Teltamentor New, whole fubje6b is the Spirit, are Evan: gelical; they all belong unto, andare parts of theGofpel. For the Law had noPro- mile of the Spirit, or anyPriviledge by him annexed unto it. Andhence he is cal- led the holy Spirit of promife, Ephef: i.15. Who next tinto the PerlonofChrift, was the great fubjeEt of Promifes from the foundationof the wörld: ( 3.) By theft Promifes are Believers a6tually and really made ppreakereof the Spirit. They are vehicula Spiritus ; the Chariots that bring this holySpirit into Our fouls, ®Pet.l.4. BY theftgreat and precious Promife is thePivine Naturecommunicated untoxr, fo far forth as unto the indwelling of this bled Spirit. Every Evangelical Promife is untoa Believer, but as it were the cloathing of the Spirit ; in receiving whereofhe receives theSpirit h'imfelf, for fofne tithebleffed Ends of this great' falvation. God makes ufe of theWordof the Gofpel; and of no other means', to this purpofe. So that herein alto it is thegrace of God thatbringeth falvation: Thirdly, In our Júftificasion. And this bath fit great a (hare in thisfalvation, that it is often called falvation its felt; And they that are juftifted; are laid to befitted asEphef: 2. 8. And this is by the Gofpel alone; which is a point of fuch importance, that it is themain fubjetft ofbotrrt of Pauli Epifles, and isfully taught in them all. Ana in fundry refpefts it is by the Gofpel: ( r.)Becaufe therein, and thereby is appointedasidconnituted the Nett, Law of pi.: jtification, whereby even a finner may come to be ¡unified before God. The Law of Ju/tifcation was, that he that did the Work! of theLawfhould live in them, Roma 6.5. But this became weakand unprofitable by reafon of fm; Rom. 8. ;. Heb. 8. y, 8, 9. That any inner, ( andwe have allfinned and comePort of the glory of God) Mould be ¡unified by this Law or Rule, implyes a contradillion, and is utterly impoffible. Wherefore God by the Gofpel bath conitituted a newLaw of Juftification, even the Lars of faith, Korn. 3. 27. which is the holy Declaration of his Will and Grace , that fitantrs (ball be juffified and acceptedwith himby faith in the bloodofChrilt, without the;Forks of the Law; that be rbar believeth fhall In fared.
