n.J...w i8o - e%?n Expofitaonof the C U A P. I Ir ,tuted and appointed in the Law of faith to be propofed unto all that (hall be- lieve. And on the account hereof, the Gofpel is falvation. C z. Becaufe in every Juftification there mutt be a Rigbteoufnefl before God, on the account whereof, the Perfon to be juflified is to be pronounced and de- clared righteous, this is tendered, propofed, and exhibited unto us in and by the Gofpel This is no other but the LordChrift himfelf and his Righteoufnefs, Ifa. 45.21,22. Rom. 8, 3, 4. Rom. 10. 4. 2 Cor. 5. z t. Gal. 3. 13, 14. NowChrifi with his whole Righteoufnefs, and all the benefits thereof, are tendered unto us, and given unto, or bellowed on them that do believe, by the Promife of the Gofpel. Therein is he preached and propofed as crucified before our eyes, and we are invited to accept of him, which.thefouls ofBelievers through the Gofpel do accordingly. And (3. ) Faith it felfwhereby we receive the Lord aril' for all the Ends for which he is tendered unto us, and become a&ually interefted in all the fruits and be- nefits of hisMediation, is wrought in us by the Word of the Gofpel. For as we have declared, it is the feedof all Gracewhatever ; and inerpecial, faith cometh by bear- ing, and bearing by this word ofGod, Rom. to. 17. Conviction of fin is by the Law: but faith is by the Gofpel. And this is the Way and means whichGod hathappoint- ed on our part, for thegiving us an adtuaI interefi in J:tflification ; as eflablifhed in the Lawof the Gofpel, Rom. 5. r. Again, ( 4. )The Promifeofthe Go#elconveyedunto the foul by the HolySpirit, and en- tertained by faith, compleats thejuffification of a-believer in his own conference, and gives him affieredPeace with God. And then the whole work of this mainbranch of our falvation is wrought by the Gofpel. Fourthly, There is in this falvation an inftrudtion and growth in fjíiritualJVfdom, and an Acquaintance with the MyflerieofGod, everyof the Father and the Son, which alfo is an Effect ofthe Gofpel. Of our felves .we are not only dark and ignorant ofheavenly things, but darknefl it felf; that is, utterly blind, and incomprehenfive of fpiritual Divine Myfieries,Ephef 5.8. and fo under the Power of darknefi, Col. t.1 ;. as that we fhould no lets than theDevils themfelves be holden under the chains of it unto the Judgement of the great Day. Darknefl and ignorance as to the things ofGod themfelves, in refpedt of the Revelation of them, and Darknefs in theMind and Un- derflanding of them in a right manner, being revealed, is upon the whole world. Andno heart is able to conceive, no tongue to exprefs the greatnefs and mifery of this Dà ivefl. The removal hereof is amercy unexpreffible, the beginningof our en- trance into Heaven, the Kingdomof Light and Glory, and an efpecial part of our fal- vation : For God is light, andin him there is no darknefl at all ; fo that whiled we are under the power ofit, we.can have no entercourfe with him; For what commu- nion bath light with Darknefi? Now the removal hereof isby the Gofpel, zCor. 4.6. Godwho commands light toPineout of darknefl, Pines inour hearts io give us the know- ledge of his Glory in the face of his Son ; and hedoth it by the Illumination ofthe glo- rious Go#elof Cbriff, v. 4. For hot only is theObjett revealed hereby, Life andImmorta- liy being brought to light by the Goffiel, but alto the Eyes of our underflandings are en- lightned by it, fivingly to difcern the Truths by it revealed. For by it, it is, that both the eyes of the blind are opened, and light fhineth unto them that fit in darknefi; whencewe arelaid to be calledout of darkne/1 into marvelous light, a Pet. 2. g. And our Calling is no otherwife but,by theWord of the Gefiel, And as the implanting of thisheavenly Light in us is by the Word,fo thegrowth and encreafe of it in fpiri- tual Wifdom is no otherwife wrought, z Cor. 3. u8. Col. 2.2. And thisfpizitual Ac- quaintance withGod in Chrift, this laving Wifdom in the Myfierie ofGrace, this holy Knowledge and Undcrftandingof the MindofGod, this growingLight and infight into Heavenly things , which is begun , encreafed, and carryed on by the Go- fpel, is an efpecial dawning of that Glory and immortality , which this falvation teildeeh ultimately unto., Fifthly,There belongs unto it alto that goyand Confolation, which believers are Made partakers ofby theHoly Ghofi in this world. Ofttimes their Tsyalsare many, their troublesgreat, and their temptations abound in the courfe of their obedience. And thefe things are ready to fill themwithCares, Fears, Sorrows and Difconfolati- on.. Nowthough our Lord jefus Chrift hath foretold his Difciples of all the tribu- lotions andforrowr that fhould attend them in this world, and taught them to up hold and fuppórt their (pities with the thoughts and hopes of the glory that Mall be.
