XVI. An humble Enquiry into, and Profpetl of the Infinite Wifdom of G o D, in the Conflitution of the Per- fog of CHRIST, and the way f SAI.VATÌON thereby. R OM the conlderation of the things before infifted on, we may endeavour, according unto our meafure, to take a view of; and humbly adore the infinite wifdom of God in the holy contrivance of this great myftery of godlinefs, God manifefl in the fiefs. As it is a fpiritual evangelical myftery, it is an effeck of divine wifdom, in the redemption and falvation of the church, unto the eternal glory of God, and as it is a great myflery, fo it is the myftery of the manifold wifdom of God, Ephef. iii. 9. ro. that is, of infinite wifdom working in great variety of adings and operations, fuited unto, and expreffive of its own infinite fulnefs: For herein were all the treafures of wifdom and knowleege laid up, and laid out, Col. ii. 3. Anargument this is, in forne parts whereof diverfe of the ancient writers of the churchhave laboured, fome occafionally, and forne with exprefs defign. I hall infift only on thofe things which fcripture light leads us direly unto. The depths ofdivine wifdom in this glorious work are hid from the eyes of all living. God alone osnderflandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof, as he fpeaks, fob xxviii. 2i; --23. Yet isit fo glorious in its effects, that deflruflion and death fay, We have heard thefame ofit With our ears, ver. is. The fame and report of this di- vine wifdom reach even unto hell. Thofe who eternally perilh fhall hear a fame of this wifdom in the glorious effels of it, towards the bleffed fouls above, though forne of them would not believe it here in the light of the gofpel, and none of them can underftand it there in their everlaft- ing darknefs. Hence the report which they have of this wifdom, is an aggravation of their mifery. Tlaefe depths we may admire and adore, but we cannot comprehend : For who háth known the mind ofthe Lord here- in, or with whom took he counfel ? concerning the original caufes Of hiscoun- fels in this great ntyflery, we can only fay, 0 the depths of the riches both of the wifdom and knowledge of God1 How unfearcbable are his judgments, and his wayspall finding out! This alone is left unto us in the way of duty, that in theeffeds of them, we fhould contemplate on their excellent fo as to give glory to God, and live in an holy admira- tion ofhis wifdom and grace. For to give glory unto him, and admire him is our prefent duty, until he (hall come eternally to be glorified in his faints, and admired in all them that believe, 2 Thef. i. to. We can do nomore but ftand at the fooe of this ocean, and adore its unfearchable 'depths. What is deliveoed from them by divine revelation we may re- ceive
