of the PERSO.NO/ CHRIST. 173 3.] The end why the Lord Chrift thus afcended, and thus entred in- to the holy place, was to appear in the pretence of God for us, and to make intercef7ron for all that come unto God by him, Heb. vii. 26. 27. chap. ix. 24, 25. He afcended triumphantly into heaven, as Solomon afcended into his glorious throne ofjudgment, defcribed, a KingsX. 18, 19, 20. As David was the type of his concjuefl over all the enemies of his church, fo was Solomonofhis glorious reign. The types were multiplied becaufe oftheir imperfellion. Thencame unto him the Queen ofSheba, the type of the gentile converts and the church. When =my v-0, i , the voluntaries of thepeople (thofemade willing in the day of his power, Pfal cx. 3.) gather- ed themfelves to the people of the God ofAbraham, and were taken in his covenant Pfal xlvü. 9. But he afcended gracioufly, as the high prieft went into the holy place. Not to rule all things glorioufly with mighty power, not to ufe his fword and his fcepter, but to appear a: an highpriefl in a garment down to the foot, and agoldengirdle about bis paps, Rev. t. 13. as in a tabernacle or temple before a throne of grace. His fitting down at the right hand of the majefty on high, adds to the glory of his prieffly office, but belongs not unto theexecutionof it. So itwas prophefied of him, that hefhould be a prie/1 on his throne, Zech. vi. 13. It may be added hereunto that when he thus left this world and afcen- ded into glory, the great promife he made unto his difciplesas they were to be preachers of the gofpel; and in them unto all that fhould fucceed them in that office, was that he would fend the holyfpirit unto them, to teach and guide them, to lead them into all truth, to declare unto them themyfteries of the will, grace and love of God, for the ufe of the whole church. This he promifed to do, and did in the difcharge of his prophe- tical office. And although his giving gifts unto men was an aft of his Kingly power, yet it was for the end ofhis prophetical office. From what bath been fpoken it is evident that the Lord Chrift afcended into heaven,or was received up intoglory, with thisdeign, namely,to exercife his office of mediation in the behalf of the church until the end fhouldbe. As this was his grace, that when he was rich, for our fakes be became poor; fo when he was made rich again for his own fake, he layes forth all the riches of his glory and power on our behalf. 3. The glory of the flare and condition whereinto Chrift thus entred, is the next thing to be confidered. For he isfat down at the right hand of the majefly on high. And as his afcenfion with the ends ofit were twofold, or of a double confederation, fo was his glory that enfued there- on. For his prefent mediatory flare conftfts either in the glory of his power and authority; or in the gloryof his love and grace ; his glory as a King, or his glory as a prieft. For the firft of theft, or his royal glory, in fovereign power and authority over the whole creation of God, all in heaven and earth, perlons and thing's, angels and men, good and bad, alive and dead, all things fkiritual and eternal, grace, gifts and glory, his right and power or ability to difpofeof all things according unto . his will and pleafure, I have fo fully and diftinftly declared it, in my expofition on, Heb. i. 3. as that I fhall not here again inftft upon- it. His prefent glory in the way of love and grace; his glory as a prieft, will be manifefted in what doth enfue. Xx CHAP.
