266 Of COMMUNION with alto is true, that there is no nation but lath a fenfe of fin, and the difpleafure of God for it. For this is the very firft (et) notion of God in the World, that he is the rewarder of good and evil, hence were all the facrifices, purgings, expiarions, which were fo generally fpread over the face of the earth, but this was and is but very dark, in refpeft of that knowledge of fin with its appurtenances, which is to he obtained. A further knowledge of fin upon all accounts whatever, is given by the law; that law which was added becaufe of tranfgreffions, Gal. ill. 09. Rom. vii. 03. This revives dodirinally all that fenfe of good and evil which was at first implanted in man, 'and it is a glafs whereinto whofoever is able fpirituatly to look, may fee fin in 211 its uglinefs and deformity. The truth is, look upon the law in its purity, boli- nefs, compafs, and perfe&ion, its manner of delivery (b) with dread, terrour, thunder, earthquakes, fire, the fan&ion of it, in death, carfe, wrath, and it makes a wonderful difcovery of fin, upon every ac- count, its pollution, guilt, and exceeding finfulnefs are feen by it. But yet all this doth not fuflice to give a man a true and through convic- tion of fin. Not but that the glafs is clear, but of our felves we have not eyes to look into it; the rule is Ttraight, but we cannot ap- ply it, and therefore Chrift fends his fpirit to convince the world of fin, oh. xvi. 8. who, though as to fome ends and purpofes he makes ufe of the law, yet the work of cons&ion, which alone is an ufeful know- ledge of fin, is his peculiar work. And fo the difcovery of fin, may alto be faid to be by Chrift, to be part of the`wifdom that is hid in him. But yet there is a twofold regard befides this, of his fend- ing his fpirit to convince us, wherein this wifdoin appears to be hid in him. r.] Becaufe there are fome near concernments of fin, which are more clearly held out in the Lord Chrifl's being made fin for us than any caller way. 2.] In that there is no knowledge to be had of fin, fo as to give it a fpiritual and faving improvement, but only in him. r.] For the first, there are four things in fin, that clearly "Thine (a) Primes eftbeam coitus, Peas credos: ¿diode reddere is majrftatein foam, reddire bonitateml fine qui nutlet majeflas eft.
