274 Of COMMUNION with This is the foul's fecond inquiry, and it finds a refolution only in the Lord Chrift; For ifWhen we were enemies, we were reconciled to Godby the death of bis fan; much more being reconciled, we fhall be famed by his life, Ronk. v. to. his death reconciled us, then are we faxed by his life. The aftual obedience which he yielded to,the whole law of God, is that righteoufnefs whereby we are fatted ; Iffo be we are found in him, not hailing onour own righteoufnefs which is of the law, but the righteoufnefs which is of God by faith, Phil. iii. q. This I fhill have occation to handle more at large here- after. To return then. It is not I fuppofe any difficult task, to perfuade men convinced of immortality and judgment to come, that the main of their wifdom lies in this, even to find out filch a ti hteoufnefs as will accompany them for ever, and abide the fevere trial of God himfelf. Now all the wifdorn of the world is but folly, as to the difcovery of this thing. The utmoft that man's wifdorn can do, is but tofind out molt wretched, bur- thenfome, and vexatious ways of perifhing eternally. All the treafures of this wifdom are hid in Chrift, He of God is made Unto us wifdom, and rich= teoufnefe, t Cori. 3o. [3.] Come we to the laft thing which I fhall but touch upon, and that is judgment, the true wifdom of this alfo is hid in the Lord Chrift; I mean to particularthat judgment that is for to come; fo at prefent I take theword in that place. Of what concernment this is to us to know, I fhalI not fpeak ; it is that, whofe(a) influence upon the funs of men, is the princi- ple of their difcriminating themfelves from the beaíts that peril'''. Neither Shall I infift on the (b) obfcure intimations of it, which are givenby the prefent proceedings of providence in governing the world, nor that greater light of it, which fhines in the threats and promifes of the law. The wif- dom of it, is in two regards hid in the Lord Jefus. i.) As to the truth of it. a.) As to the insturer of it. I.) For the truth of it; and fo in and by him it is confirmed, and that two ways. By his death, God in the death of Chrift, punifhing and condemning fin in the flefh of his own fon, in the fight of men, angels and devils, hath given an abundant affurance ofa righteous and univerfal judgment to come; wherefore, or upon what account imaginable, could he be induced to lay fuch aload on him, but that he will certainlyreckon one day with the fons of men for all their works, ways and walkingsbefore him? Thedeath of Chrift is a moll: folemn exemplar of the laft judgment. Thofe who own him to be the fon of God, will not deny a judgment to come. (a. By his refurre&ion, 411. xvii. 3r. mane waeaavIv loamy, he hath given faith and affurance of this thing to all, by raifing Chrift from the dead, having appointed him to be the judge of all, in whom, and by whomhe will judge the world in righteoufnefs.
