328 Of CoMMuNIoN iR12tJ [2.] He gives us habitual grace, a principle of grace oppofed to the prin- ciple of lull that is in us bynature. This is the grace that dwells in us; makes its abode with us, which according to the diftinft faculties of our fouls, wherein it is, or the diflind objelts about which it is exercifed, re- ceiveth various appellations, being indeed all but one new principle of life. In the underftanding it is light, in the will obedience, in the affe&ions love, in all faith. So alfo it is differenced in refpeft ofits operation, when it carries out the foul to refs on Chrift, it is faith ; when to delight inhim, it is love ; but Rill one and the faine habit of grace. And this is the fe- cond thing. [3.] Adult influence for the performance of every fpiritnal duty what- ever. After the faints have both the former, yet Chrift tells them that without him they can do nothing, Joh. xv. q. They are gill in dependance uponhim, for new influences ofgrace, or fupplies of the Spirit, they can- not live and fpend upon theold flock for every new aft they muff have new grace ; he muff work in us to Will and to do of his good plrafure, Phil. ii. 13. And in thefe three thus briefly named confifts that purchafed grace in the point of fanBification, as to the collating of purity and clean nefs wherein we have communion with Chrift. 3. This purchafed grace confifls, in privileges to nand before God ; and thefe are of two forts, primary and confequential, primary in adoption ; the Spirit of adoption : confequential, are all the favours of the Gofpel, which the faints alone have rightunto. But of this I flail fpeak, when I come to the Taft branch ofcommunion with the HolyGhofl. Thefe are the things wherein we have communion with Chriff, as topur- chafed grace in this life. Drive them up to perfeftion, and you have that which we call everlafting glory ; perfeft acceptance, perfeft holinefs, per- k& adoption, or inheritance offons, that is glory. Our procefs now in the next place is to what I mainly intend, even the manner how wehold communion with Chrift in thefe things, and that in the order laid down ; as, t. How we hold communion with him in the obedience of his life and merit of his death, as to acceptance with God the father. a. Howwe hold communion with Chrift in his blood, as to the fpirit of fanâification, the habits, and alts of grace. g. How we hold communion pith him as to the privileges we enjoy. Ofwhich in the enfuing Chapters.* ái C H A P.
