Our univerfal obedience, and good works, are indifpenfably necelfa- ry from the fovereign appointment and will of God, father, fon, and Holy Ghoft. (r. In general, This is the will of God, even our fan£lification, or holi- nefs, t Thef. iv. 3. this is that which God wills, which he requires of us, that we be holy, that we be obedient, that we do his will as the angels do in heaven. The equity, neceffity profit and advantage of this ground of our obedience, might at large be infifted on. And were there nomore, this might fufice alone. If it be the will of God, it is our duty. (t. The father hath ordained or appointed it, it is the will of the-fa- ther, Ephef. ii. to. the father is fpoken of perfonally; Chrift being men- tioned as mediator. (a. The fon hath ordained and appointed it as mediator, Yoh. xv. 16. F have ordainedyou thatyoußiould bringforthfruit, of obedience, and that it fhould remain. And (3. The Holy Ghoft appoints and ordains believers to works of obedi- ence and holinefs, and to work holinefs in others, fo in particular, Al?. xiii. 2. he appoints and defign men to the great work of obedience in preaching the Gofpel; and in finning, men fin againft him. a.) Our holinefs, our obedience, work of righteoufnefs, is one eminent and fpecial end of the peculiar difpenfation of father, fon and Spirit in the bufinefs of exalting the gloryof God in our falvation; of the eleftuig love of the father; the purchaling love of the fon, and the operative love of the Spirit. (i. It is a peculiar end of the elefting love of the father, Epbef. i. 4. He .hath chofen us that.ree fhouldbe holy andunblameable. SoVa. iv. 3, 4. his aim and defign in choofing of us was, that we fhould be holy, and unblame able before him in love. This he le to accomplifh and will bring about in them that are his. He choofes us to falvation, through thefanffication of the Spirit, and belief of the truth, 2 Theft. ii. t a. This the father-defigned as the firíl and immediate end of elefting love, and psopofes the confrderati- on of that love, as a motive to holinefs, t Yoh. iv. 8, 9, ro. (2.
